Cancel Google Workspace

Cancel a Google Workspace subscription

If you purchased your service from a reseller, go here instead |  Do I have a reseller?

To cancel your Essentials edition, go instead to Cancel Essentials.

To stop using Google Workspace at your organization and stop being billed for it, cancel your subscription.

Impact to services after you cancel Google Workspace

  • You lose access to core Google Workspace services, such as Gmail, Calendar, Meet, and more.
  • You still have access to Additional Google services, such as YouTube, Google Photos, and Google Ads.

If you have Cloud Identity, you will still have access to certain core Google Workspace services, such as Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Keep, but with these caveats:

  • Administrative controls and settings that are available only with Google Workspace will be removed. These controls include audits, reporting, sharing policies, and alerts. For information on file sharing permissions for Cloud Identity users, go to Drive file sharing permissions.
  • Shared drives—After you cancel, you can view shared drive data, but you can’t edit, move, or delete the data or drives.

When billing stops

If you’re billed on a monthly Flexible Plan, canceling Google Workspace immediately stops you from incurring new charges for Google Workspace services. If you’re on an Annual/Fixed-Term Plan, you’ll be charged for the remaining balance of your contract.

You might still be charged for services used since your last payment. Learn more later on this page

Canceling during 14-day free trial

You can cancel your Google Workspace subscription during your free trial and you won't be charged. Your subscription will be canceled during your free trial if you do not:

  • Verify your domain within 9 days of starting your trial (not applicable if you signed up for a Business edition with your business email).
  • Set up billing by the end of the trial.

Step 1: Save your data (such as emails, documents)

After you cancel your Google Workspace subscription, your users' Google Workspace data will be deleted and can’t be restored.

Before you cancel your Google Workspace subscription, download any user data you want to save. This data might include Gmail messages, Google Calendar events, Google Chat messages, and files stored in Google Drive.

The easiest way to download and export your users' data is to use the Data Export tool.

Note that canceling Google Workspace doesn’t remove user accounts, groups, or your organizational structure. These items remain unless you delete your organization’s Google Account.

Step 2: Cancel your Google Workspace subscription

Here’s how to cancel Google Workspace and stop being billed for your subscription. Cancel your subscription after exporting any user data you want to save. Read about charges after you cancel.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Billingand thenSubscriptions.

Depending on your subscription, you may not need to click More.

  4. Select a reason for cancelingand thenclick Continue.
  5. Choose what you want to happen after you cancel your subscription:
Delete all team data and your account, but keep user data

Select Let users keep their data and delete my organization's account.

All your users' data in My Drive stays with the user accounts, which will be converted to unmanaged consumer accounts. Users can sign in to their accounts using their same credentials and access their Workspace data, such as Drive files and Chat history.

You instruct Google to not delete Workspace data on cancellation and waive any rights to own and manage the data. This action can't be reversed.

Your organization’s Google Account, including all data in shared drives, and your groups, organizational units, and billing records will be deleted.

You’ll be signed out of your Admin console and returned to the Google Workspace Home page. You can no longer sign in to the Admin console.

Delete all team and user data within 90 days, with the option to delete your account afterward

    Select Delete users' data.

All user data in My Drive and organization data in shared drives will be deleted. Deletion can take up to 90 days, and users can’t access Drive during this period.

After the data is deleted, you can delete your organization’s Google Account, which frees your domain within 24 hours for use with a new Google Account. After you delete your organization’s account, all user accounts will be converted to unmanaged consumer accounts, and users can access Drive again.

If you can't wait 90 days for deletion, you can request an accelerated deletion of user data in My Drive. The accelerated process deletes only Drive data. To request an accelerated deletion, contact Google Workspace support.

If you don't delete your organization's Google Account, you can add a new Workspace Business subscription. Follow the steps at Add a new subscription.

  6. Enter the email address associated with your account.
  7. Click Cancel My Subscription.
  8. (Optional) If you chose to delete your organization’s account, check the box and click Delete Account.
  9. If a status message appears, click Close.

Looker Studio reports

If you’ve been using Looker Studio to create reports with Google Workspace data, here's how cancellation affects these reports:

  • Domain-verified subscriptions—Your reports remain available after you cancel Google Workspace. If you keep your Google Account, any organization-level sharing restrictions you created in the Google Admin console won't change.
  • Email-verified subscriptions—If you select Let users keep their data and delete my organization's account, any organization-level sharing restrictions you created in the Admin console will be removed.

(Optional) Step 3: Delete your organization’s Google Account

If you canceled a domain-verified subscription and no longer want a Google Account for your organization, delete the entire account. Deleting your organization’s account frees your domain within 24 hours for use with a new Google Account.

Before you delete your account, remember to:

  • Save your billing records
  • Save user data
  • Delete Marketplace apps
  • Save and delete Google Cloud data
  • Cancel your subscriptions
  • Unlink your zero-touch accounts
  • Remove active Android EMM bindings

For steps, go to Delete your organization’s Google Account.

Don’t delete your account if you have other subscriptions

After canceling Google Workspace, keep your Google Account if you want to manage other subscriptions from your Admin console. Other subscriptions might include:

Resubscribe to Google Workspace later

If you keep your organization’s Google Account, you can resubscribe to Google Workspace later and your user accounts, groups, and organizational units will still be available. You can add your new subscription within 51 days of canceling. Otherwise, you'll need to wait until after 84 days when the cancellation process finishes. During the period when you can't resubscribe, Google Workspace subscriptions will show as Not Available in the Admin console.

For steps to add Google Workspace back to your Google Account, go to Add a paid subscription.

Questions?

I can't access the Admin console. What do I do?

If you can’t access your Admin console, try these solutions.

Can you refund my credit?

Yes. If you have funds remaining after canceling your subscription, contact us to request a refund.

Why was I charged after cancellation?

After you cancel your subscription, you’re billed at the start of the next month for any outstanding charges in your account. The amount is calculated according to your service and billing plan:

  • Flexible Plan—You’re charged for the days you used the service. For example, if you cancel on the 15th of this month, you're billed for half a month of service.
  • Annual/Fixed-Term Plan—You’re charged for the remaining balance of your commitment, if you have one.
  • Essentials (paid edition)—You’re charged the full monthly cost for each active user in that month. Learn more about How Essentials billing works.
What happens to domains purchased while signing up for Google Workspace?

If you purchased your domain while signing up for Google Workspace, you may want to transfer management to Squarespace before you delete your Google Workspace account. If you don’t transfer management before doing this, you will lose access to your Squarespace domain.

If you’re planning to delete your Google Workspace account

You will need to turn off single sign-on (SSO) before you delete your Google Workspace account while you still have access to Squarespace. This ensures that you will have access to your Squarespace domain after you delete your Google Workspace account.

To switch your Squarespace login details from Google Workspace, carry out the steps in Switch from social login to email login.

If you’ve already deleted your Google Workspace account

If you’ve deleted your Google Workspace account, and you can’t access Squarespace, you will need to contact Squarespace Support and request the transfer of your domain management to Squarespace. For details, go to How do I contact Squarespace Customer Support?
