Use Google Fit

  1. Get started with Google Fit

With Google Fit, you can measure, track and store your fitness information on your mobile devices and smartwatches.

    • Set goals around personal fitness
    • Automatically measure how close you are to reaching those goals
    • See what kinds of activities you perform daily and how long you do them
    • Compare your activity over time to see how you’ve improved
    • Keep and view data from other fitness apps that you’ve connected to Google Fit

You’ll need a mobile device and a Google Account to get started with Fit.

Get Google Fit on your watch

Google Fit is already installed on most Wear OS by Google watches. If you can't find it, you can get it from the Play Store.

    1. If the screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
    2. To go to your list of apps, press the Power button.
    3. Scroll down and tap Play Store Google Play. You'll sign in with the Google Account used to set up your watch.
    4. To search for an app, tap Search Search.
    5. Find and download the Google Fit app Google Fit.
  2. Earn Heart Points to stay healthy

To keep your heart healthy, the American Heart Association (AHA) encourages you to stay active. Each week, they recommend that you do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. To help you follow these recommendations, Google Fit tracks your exercise in the form of Heart Points and steps.

    How to earn Heart Points

You get Heart Points from activities that increase your heart pumping. You can earn Heart Points from activities such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, taking exercise classes or playing tennis. Make sure that you track or log your activity.

    How Fit measures your activity

The method of measuring your activity depends on the devices that you have and use. Google Fit uses your phone's sensors or a heart rate monitor to track your Heart Points and steps.

    Based on your heart rate

If you have a heart rate sensor on your Fit-compatible device, like a smartwatch, Google Fit calculates your Heart Points and steps while you exercise.

To best track your heart rate, on your device, tap Start a workout.

    • One minute at a moderate intensity heart rate (50%–69%) = 1 Heart Point
    • One minute at a vigorous intensity heart rate (70% or higher) = 2 Heart Points

Tip: This is the percentage of your estimated maximum heart rate. Your maximum heart rate is based on the formula 205.8 - (0.685 x [your age, if provided]).

Wear OS devices have a heart rate zone gauge that ranges from positions such as Low, Moderate or Intense. You can earn Heart Points when your heart rate zone is in the Moderate and Intense zones.

    Based on motion detection

If you don’t have a heart rate sensor on your device, Google can still try to recognise the type of activity that you’re doing.

    • Activity for more than one minute (at 30 steps per minute) = 1 Move Minute
    • One minute of cycling = 1 Heart Point
    • One minute of brisk walking (100 steps or more per minute) = 1 Heart Point
    • One minute of running (130 steps or more per minute) = 2 Heart Points

    Converting exercise into points

Google Fit uses the following guidelines to convert your activity into Heart Points using Metabolic Equivalent of Task, or METs. You earn bonus points for vigorous activity.

    • One minute of any activity that is 3.0 to 5.9 METs = 1 Heart Point
    • One minute of any activity 6.0 METs or greater = 2 Heart Points

How long you should stay active

Google Fit gives you a Heart Point for each minute of activity that you do. While the AHA recommends staying active for at least ten minutes, recent science suggests that any moderate to vigorous exercise is helpful, however long you do it.

  3. Find your activity

Once you set up Google Fit to track your activity, use the app or your watch to see how close you are to your goals. You can also compare your activity with previous days.

  4. Connect other apps with Google Fit

With Google Fit, you can keep all your fitness information tied to your Google Account and share it with the other apps and devices you use to stay healthy. When you want to check in or get insights about your activities, open Google Fit.

You can grant apps access to the data, and remove this access at any time in the Google Fit settings. You can also delete the data stored in Google Fit at any time. Learn more about How connected app sharing works with your Google Fit data.

Track your health and wellness with Google Fit

  1. Track your fitness with your watch

Your Wear OS watch can help you track fitness info, like steps taken, calories burned, heart rate and workouts. You can find this info in the Google Fit app on your watch.

    Get started

    • You can usually find Google Fit on your Wear OS watch already. If it’s not there, you can download it from the Play Store on your watch.
    • You can also download Google Fit on the phone that’s paired with your watch. Find out how to set up Google Fit app.

Track your activities with Google Fit

Google Fit works best if you use the app on both your watch and your phone. Then you can get more information and sync your data between your phone, watch and other apps.

You’ll find your Google Fit data on both your phone and watch when both devices are turned on. If the two devices are far apart, they’ll sync their data when they're close together again.

If you use Google Fit only on your watch, you can:

    • Find how many steps you took in the past seven days.
    • Find your past 10 heart rate measurements.

If you also install the app on a connected phone, you can also:

    • Count reps of squats, push-ups and sit-ups.
    • Find distance and calories burned.
    • Connect to other apps and services like MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper and Strava.

  2. Add and edit fitness activities

You can manually add activity to your Google Fit activity history or edit an activity that’s already there. You can also start challenges, log your weight and more.

  3. Update your profile and goals

You can fill in profile information, like your height, weight and gender, for better fitness accuracy. You can also set a personal fitness goal. If you have a Wear OS smartwatch, you can set a goal for each workout.

Tip: To find the distance that you've gone and how many calories you've burned, fill in your profile.

Create a workout goal on your smartwatch

    1. If the screen is dim, tap it to wake up the watch.
    2. In Google Fit, start a workout.

You can track your walks, runs, bike rides and more on Google Fit. Check how many steps you took and see how long you rode your bike, played football or went skiing.

You can see your workout history on all devices where you use Fit. If something isn’t accurate, edit the activity.

  5. Get reminders to stop your workout

Important: To determine when you’ve finished a workout, workout reminders use your device’s accelerometer data to determine when a workout stops. This data never leaves your device.

To help save battery, Fit detects when you’ve stopped moving and alerts you to stop your workout on your watch.

Fit determines whether you’ve stopped a workout:

    • When you’re still for five minutes after activities, like a run or a bike ride.
    • When you’re still for 10 minutes after some other activities, like a walk.
Tip: Since many workouts include walks between activities, you’ll only get a reminder to end your workout if you‘ve stopped moving for several minutes. For example, if you run, stop and start to walk, or weightlift, stop and walk to get a drink, you won’t get an alert.

    What you need

Fit only sends end workout reminders on some Wear OS devices.

    Turn off 'end workout' reminders

Important: End workout reminders are turned on by default. You can also turn reminders off for different activities at any time.

    Data that you've deleted

When you delete data, we follow a process described in the Google Privacy Policy to safely and completely remove it from your account. First, deleted activity is immediately removed from view and no longer used to personalise your Google experience. Then, we begin a process designed to safely and completely delete the data from our storage systems.

Data, such as items from My Activity, photos or documents that are still in the process of being deleted are not included in your archive.

Important: If the info that you're looking for isn't available with these tools, visit our Privacy Help Centre, where you can learn about what information we collect, why we collect it and how you can update, manage, export and delete your information. If the info has been deleted from our storage systems, it is unlikely to be recoverable.

You’ll need to sign in to your Google Account to complete the form.

How do I locate my exported Takeout data?

Once your data export request is complete, you will receive an email notification containing a link to the folder where your data is located.

If you selected 'Send download link via email', then you will be redirected to the folder containing your data in Google Takeout to download your data.

Otherwise, it will link you to the location of the folder containing your data in the cloud destination (Drive, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive) that you selected.

Which format should I choose for my data?
Deciding what format you should choose depends on the service, type of data and your intended use of it. We have chosen types that we believe are the most useful and portable. For example, we export contacts as vCard, which is a very common format for email providers. We will also often provide additional options to fit your specific needs.
What if I'm unable to download my data?
If you're unable to download your data, try selecting fewer product files to export and/or request a smaller archive data size from the drop-down options within the product. Additionally, try exporting to a third-party storage site, such as Box or Storage.
What if I can't open certain file formats?
HTML files can be opened in any standard browser; CSV and JSON files can be opened in TextEdit software, industry standard inbox or ICS-specialised service.
Can I select a time period when exporting data vs exporting all of the data?
At this time, we do not currently support exporting data for certain time frames.
Where should I store my data?

You can store your data anywhere that is safe and has enough room for it. In most cases, it is easiest to download it directly to your computer.

If you use a public computer, store it in Google Drive or an alternative storage space where you are the only user.

Note: If you use Google Drive and plan to delete your Google Account, you'll have to move your archive to a different storage space before deleting your account.

How do I share my exported Takeout data with a third-party app or website?

If you downloaded your data to your device, you can share it directly with a third-party app or website using that third party's access point.  This access point can take different forms, including an email address, a third-party app or a website's custom-built upload functionality where you can upload the data directly.

If you added your data to a cloud storage destination, such as Drive, Box, OneDrive or Dropbox, you can directly share your data from the cloud provider to a third-party app or website.  In many instances, this will involve sharing your data directly from the cloud provider to the third party via email supported by the cloud provider.

In some instances, a third-party app or website may integrate directly with a cloud storage destination and give you the ability to grant the third party access to read your data directly from the cloud destination.

Why was my archive broken into multiple files?

Archives that are larger than the size limit that you selected are split into multiple files.

To decrease the possibility that your archive will be split, you can select the 50 GB size limit.

Note: Special software may be required to unpack a TGZ archive. Bear in mind that these types of files can't have unicode characters in the file names.
    Why do my archives expire?

Your archive expires in about seven days. After that time, you'll want to create a new archive with your most up-to-date information.

An expired archive doesn't mean that your data has expired, and you won't experience any change in Google services as a result.

Note: We only allow each archive to be downloaded five times; after that, please request another archive.

Why do I have to enter my password again when I try to download my archive?

The security of your data is very important, so when you create an archive, we want to make sure that you're the only person downloading your data.

To do that, we ask you to re-enter your Google Account password if you haven't recently. We understand that this may be inconvenient, but it's important to take extra steps to keep your data safe.

Note: If your account has two-step verification turned on, you may also be asked to complete an additional verification step.

    Why didn't my archive work?

If something goes wrong with your archive or you're not able to make one, try creating another one. This approach often fixes the problem.

Alternatively, try downloading the data in smaller increments by choosing one product or service at a time. This may be effective if you are attempting to download a large amount of data.

How to open the downloaded files from Takeout
We recommend downloading and viewing Takeout exports from a desktop computer, not a mobile device. Within your archive will be a file named archive_browser.html that will have additional information about the file formats, how to open the file and view the data.
Why are some recent changes not included in my archive?

The file may not include changes made to your data between when you request a download and when the archive is created. Some examples include:

    • Changes to sharing type or permissions for a Drive file
    • Resolved comments on a Drive file
    • Added or deleted photos or albums
How do I preserve my Gmail labels if I am exporting my mail?

When you export your mail from Gmail, each message's labels are preserved in a special X-Gmail-Labels header in your download file. While no mail client recognises this header now, most mail clients allow for extensions to be written that could make use of the labels.

Why can't I find some of my YouTube videos?

If you aren’t able to download some of your YouTube videos, find out if your YouTube channel is linked to a Brand Account. If it is, you’ll need to:

    • Make sure that you’re signed in to the Google Account associated with the Brand Account.
    • Switch to the Brand Account that you used to upload the videos to YouTube.

Tip: If you have more than one Brand Account, you can repeat these steps to download videos from your other Brand Accounts.

Why can't I download data from my school or work account?

Google Workspace administrators can manage if users can download data from different products. Find out who your administrator is.

Can my app customise the Takeout user interface?

The Takeout user interface supports parameters, so that apps can customise the user interface. For example, apps can select specific products, the destination for cloud exports and the frequency for scheduled takeouts.

Here is an example of the format for a URL utilising all three parameters:

    https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout/custom/google_account,my_activity,fit,youtube?dest=drive&frequency=2_months

Tip: This example is a work in progress, and may be updated from time to time. The possible values for applications or other products to include can be found in the source of the rendered html within the css attribute(s) titled 'data-id'.  For example, possible values for the 'dest' parameter include 'box', 'dropbox', 'drive', 'onedrive'.  The possible values for the 'frequency' parameter include '2_months'

To identify the value of the data-id property for products with data capable of being exported for your account:

Important: These instructions are for use with Chrome. If you use another browser, the process may vary.

    1. On a computer, visit takeout.google.com.
    2. Right-click on the Takeout web page and select the "source page" view. This will allow you to see the HTML code that makes up the page.
    3. Use the search command (Control + F on Windows or Command + F on Mac) to identify the “data-id” property.
    4. Check the search results.  What appears after the “data-id=” are the relevant values. For example: data-id="blogger"

Google has also released a new set of advanced features (Data Portability API) for developers, for the use of data by third-party applications. You can find all the available documentation at https://developers.google.com/data-portability.
