Delete photos and videos

You can delete photos and videos you don’t want from your Google Photos library or in your SD card.

Before you delete photos and videos

Know where photos do and don't get removed. 

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:

Photos and videos you delete are not automatically removed from:

  • Blogger
  • YouTube
  • Gmail
  • Google+

Get more time to recover deleted photos and videos

If you want time to recover deleted photos and videos, turn on back up & sync. Deleted items will stay in the trash for 60 days before they're permanently deleted.

Give permissions to delete photos from your SD card

Step 1: Check if you have Android L or M

These steps will only work if you have Android L or M. Learn how to check your Android version.  

Step 2: Let Google Photos use your photos

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the top, tap Menu and then Settings and then SD card access.
  4. Tap Get Started and then Recent.
  5. At the top right, tap More Moreand then Show SD card.
  6. Select your memory card. 
  7. At the bottom, tap Select.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the top, tap Menu and then Settings and then SD card access.
  4. Tap Get Started and then Recent.

Step 3: Delete your photos and videos

Follow the steps below to delete your photos and videos.

Remove photos and videos

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account. 
  3. At the bottom, tap Photos.
  4. Touch and hold a photo or video you want to move to trash.
  5. Select any other items you want to move to trash.
  6. At the top right, tap Trash .

You can also free up space on your phone and keep your photos in your Google Photos library.

Restore photos & videos

  • If you want to get a deleted item back, learn how to restore photos and videos.
  • If a photo or video you deleted comes back, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s Gallery app.
