Manage your storage

If you run out of storage, your photos and videos will stop backing up.

Important:

  • As of June 1, 2021, any new photos or videos you back up in Storage saver quality (previously named High quality) or Express quality will count toward your Google Account storage.
  • Any photos or videos you’ve backed up in High quality or Express quality before June 1, 2021 won’t count toward your Google Account storage.
  • Photos and videos backed up in Original quality will continue to count toward your Google Account storage.
  • You can back up as much as 15 GB each day.

Use Photos' storage management tool

You can use the storage management tool to know how much storage space you have left, clean up storage, and get more storage.

Specifically, you can:

  • Find out how much storage you have left.
  • Estimate how long your storage may last based on how often you back up items to your Google Account.
  • Review items that count toward your storage that you might want to delete, like blurry photos, screenshots, and large videos.
  • Buy more storage with a Google One plan (where available).

An estimate of how long your storage may last may not be available if:

  • You haven't consistently backed up content over the past few months.
  • You're close to your storage limit and we can't provide an accurate timeline estimate.
  • Your account is provided through work, school, family, or another group.
  • You're out of storage.

To see your options, make sure you have the latest version of the Google Photos app.

Check your storage

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial.
  4. Select Google Photos settings Settings and then Back up & sync and then Manage storage.
  5. At the top, you’ll find an estimate of how long it will take to fill your storage.

Clean up storage

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. At the top right, tap your account profile photo or initial.

  5. Under "Review and delete," select any category.

  7. Tap Move to trash Delete.
Tip: Uploads can be slower and use more storage if you back up to both Google Photos and Google Drive. Unless you need a second copy in Drive, we recommend you back up photos and videos to Google Photos.

Can’t buy storage for this account

If you already bought a subscription for another Google Account, or on another device, you might need to change it before buying a new subscription on your iPhone or iPad.

  • If you have another account with an existing Google One subscription, you can cancel it. After your subscription period ends, you can buy storage for another Google Account on your iPhone or iPad.
  • If you’re using your iPhone or iPad with a family member that already has Google One, you can use Google One family sharing.
