Turn on sync for your organization

This article is for administrators. To learn how to use Drive for desktop, see the user Help Center.

You can deploy Drive for desktop for your organization to sync content across multiple devices and the cloud. You can also decide if your users can download and install Drive for desktop so they can stream shared drives from their desktop without downloading their files.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu ""and then"" Appsand thenGoogle Workspaceand thenDrive and Docsand thenFeatures and Applications.

  3. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit or a configuration group.
  4. At Drive for desktop, click Edit"".
    1. Check the Allow Google Drive for desktop in your organization box.
    2. (Optional) To enable access only on authorized devices, check the Only allow Google Drive for desktop on authorized devices box.
    3. (Optional) To allow users to install Drive for desktop, check the Show Google Drive for desktop download link box.
    4. (Optional) To allow users to see who is editing shared Microsoft Office files, check the Allow users to enable real-time presence in Microsoft Office from Google Drive for desktop box.
  5. Click Save. If you configured an organizational unit or group, you might be able to Inherit or Override a parent organizational unit, or Unset a group..

Backup and Sync features

You can still enable Backup and Sync features using the Backup and Sync controls.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu ""and then"" Appsand thenGoogle Workspaceand thenDrive and Docsand thenFeatures and Applications.

  3. At Drive, click Edit"".
  4. If you choose Allow users to download, install, and use Backup and Sync or Allow use of Backup and Sync but hide the download links, features from Backup and Sync are enabled in Drive for desktop:
    • Mirror sync
    • Photos Backup
    • USB Device backup
  5. If you choose, Do not allow Backup and Sync in your organization, features from Backup and Sync are disabled in Drive for desktop.
  6. Click Save.

If you don’t allow Drive for desktop

All other Drive components are still available. Only desktop sync is disabled. Users can still manually upload and download files to and from Drive on the web and they can still access Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms. If you have the Essentials edition, you can also turn off Docs creation. For more information, go to Manage Drive for your organization.

If instead you want to disable all Drive components and the Docs editors, you can turn off Drive.
