Migrate Google Wifi to the Google Home app

When you migrate your Google Wifi devices to the Google Home app, you'll be able to do things like update your network settings, manage parental controls and run speed tests in the Google Home app. However, migrating your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app may change some features related to how you manage your devices.

Important: The Google Wifi app can no longer be used to make changes to your Wi-Fi network. To make changes, like add or remove members, change device names, perform a factory reset and run speed tests to your network, migrate to the Google Home app. However, read-only access to the Google Wifi app is still available. This means that you can still access and view the Google Wifi app and your devices.

What happens when you add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app

Wifi devices and settings

After you add your Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app, the app will allow you to: 

• Manage your Google Wifi network from the Google Home app
• Use Google Assistant to do things like pause Wi-Fi, check your Internet speed and show your guest Wi-Fi password on Nest displays
• Add a Nest Wifi point to an existing Google Wifi network
• Add a Nest Wifi router as an add-on point to an existing Google Wifi network*

*In this case, it's recommended that you follow the steps to add your Google Wifi device to a new Google Nest Wifi network instead. Google Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) can't be combined with Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points (Wi-Fi 5) in a mesh network. Replace your existing Nest Wifi or Google Wifi with Nest Wifi Pro.

Your devices, network settings and information from your Google Wifi app will also be visible in the Google Home app.

Wifi managers

Existing managers in the Google Wifi app will be removed when you add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app. You'll also no longer be able to add or remove managers in the Google Wifi app. Instead, you'll need to add others as Google Home app home members in order to give them access to your Wi-Fi and device settings. 

Bear in mind that home members in the Google Home app will have the same level of control and access to your home devices and settings that you do. This includes the ability to change your Wi-Fi password, toggle Wi-Fi access on and off for specific devices and add or remove other home members. Only invite people that you trust to become home members.

Before you begin

• Migrating your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app is not reversible.
• To migrate a Wi-Fi network, your Google Account needs to be both the owner of the network in the Google Wifi app and a member of the home in the Google Home app to which you want to migrate. Learn how to migrate a Wi-Fi network for someone else.
• The Google Home app supports only one Wi-Fi network per home. If you have multiple networks in the Google Wifi app and want to migrate them all to the Google Home app, you'll need to first create a new home in the Google Home app for each network that you want to migrate. You can create up to five homes, with a single Wi-Fi network in each.
• As of 11 January 2023, OnHub is no longer supported. If you're unsure which Wifi devices you have, check the Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi products guide.
• Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) can't be combined with Nest Wifi routers or points or Google Wifi points (Wi-Fi 5) in a mesh network.
• Download or update to the latest version of the Google Home app available on Android or iOS.

Instructions

If you want to use your Nest Wifi device and Google Wifi device together, learn how to add Nest Wifi router to an existing Google Wifi network. If you only have Google Wifi devices, continue to the instructions below.

Add your Google Wifi or OnHub network to the Google Home app

1. Open the Google Home app . If you’re new to the Google Home app, follow the prompts to set up a home. Use the same Google Account in the Home app as you use in the Google Wifi app.
2. Tap Add device or service   Import Google Wifi network Next.
3. Choose a home and tap Next.
4. Confirm your Wi-Fi network, then tap Next.
   • If you don’t find your Wi-Fi network listed, make sure that the network is online.
5. Follow the in-app instructions to finish adding your network.

If you need to migrate multiple Wi-Fi networks, repeat these steps for each network. The Google Home app only supports one Wi-Fi network per home, so you'll need to select a different home to add each network to. Learn how to create additional homes. You can create up to five homes, with a single Wi-Fi network in each. If you have more than five Wi-Fi networks, consider using multiple Google Accounts to manage them in the Home app.

Troubleshooting

Import Google Wifi network doesn't appear in the Google Home app

Only the owner of the Google Wifi network can migrate Google Wifi networks to the Google Home app. For 'Import Google Wifi network' to appear, log in to the Google Home app with the same account that is used as the 'Owner' in the Google Wifi app.

Additionally, if you originally set up your devices in the Home app or already have access to all of your Google Wifi devices in the Home app, 'Import Google Wifi network' won't appear and migration is not needed.

Check which account is the owner:

1. Open the Google Wifi app .
2. Tap Menu and select your Wifi network.
3. Tap the Settings and actions tab   Network and general  Managers.

Note: If you use multiple accounts with the Google Wifi app for different networks and can't find the network that you're looking for, you may need to switch accounts in the Google Wifi app to find your network owner.

To change accounts in the Google Home app for Wifi migration

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. At the top right, tap your account.
3. Tap your current account name and then choose the owner account found in the Google Wifi app. If your account isn’t listed, tap Add another account.
4. Once the correct account is selected, you should be able to migrate your network.

I want to use a different account in the Home app to the one that was used in the Google Wifi app

Only the Google Account associated with the 'Owner' of the Google Wifi network can migrate Google Wifi networks to the Google Home app. If you don't want to use this account in the Google Home app and want to use a different Google Account to manage your home and Wi-Fi, you can temporarily use the owner's account found in the Wifi app to migrate your network then afterwards remove that account.

New to Google Home app

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. Follow the prompts to set up a home. Make sure that you use the Google Wifi network owner's account for setup. Find out who the owner is in the Google Wifi app.
3. Follow the instructions above to add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.
4. Once migration is complete, invite the account that you want to use to be a member of your home.
5. Get the owner of that account to accept the invitation to join.
6. Remove the original Google Wifi app member from the home if desired.

Existing home in Google Home app

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. Invite the Google Wifi owner account to be a member of your home.
3. Get the owner of that account to accept the invitation to join.
4. With the Google Wifi owner account, add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.
5. After migration is complete, remove the member from the home, if desired.

If you no longer have access to the Google Wifi owner account and can't recover your account, you'll need to factory reset your devices in the Google Wifi app, then set up Google Wifi again in the Google Home app.

I received a message to migrate, but I don't think I need to

To confirm if your network needs to be migrated:

1. Open the Google Wifi app .
2. Tap Menu and select your Wifi network. If your network isn't listed, you may need to switch Google Accounts. If a network needs to be migrated, it will show 'Migrate network' below the list of your networks. 
3. For online networks that need to be migrated, follow the instructions above to add your Google Wifi network to the Google Home app.

In some cases, you may have been notified by email or in the Google Wifi app to migrate a former network that is still in your Google Wifi app. If it's a network that you no longer use, there is no need to migrate. If you'd like to stop migration notifications for these networks, you can remove your offline networks in the Google Wifi app by using the Google Wifi app to factory reset your offline network.

If any of the following are true, the 'Migrate network' option will not appear in the Google Wifi app menu and migration isn't needed for that network:

• You originally set up your Google Wifi devices in the Google Home app.
• You already have access to all of your Google Wifi devices in the Google Home app.
• You've previously migrated your network. 

'You have no unmigrated networks' message

If you tried to migrate from the Google Wifi app and received the 'You have no unmigrated networks' notification, make sure that you're logged into the Google Home app with the same account that you used in the Google Wifi app. 

For first-time Google Home app users, before you can migrate, you'll need to download the Google Home app and set up a home using the same Google Account that you used in the Google Wifi app.

To change accounts in the Google Home app for Wifi migration

1. Open the Google Home app . 
2. At the top right, tap your account.
3. Tap your current account name and then choose the owner account found in the Google Wifi app. If your account isn’t listed, tap Add another account.
4. Once the correct account is selected, you should be able to migrate your network.

Setup or migration fails when you try to add your Wi-Fi network to the Home app

This can happen if the Wi-Fi network you're trying to migrate isn't online. If the Wi-Fi network that you're trying to migrate is one that you use regularly, make sure that your Google Wifi is plugged in and connected to the Internet. You can check the light on your Wifi device or find the device in the Google Wifi app to understand your current network status.

In some cases, a Wi-Fi network may be offline because it's one that you don't use anymore. Check the Google Wifi app to confirm which network you currently use, and make sure that you select that network when you follow the steps to add your network to the Google Home app.

Migrate a network for someone else

If you're the owner of a friend or family member's Wi-Fi network in the Google Wifi app, you can either migrate their network to the Google Home app for them or transfer the control of that network to them in the Google Wifi app, so that they can migrate the network themselves. 

Step 1. Set up a home in the Google Home app

If your friend or family member already uses the Google Home app and has a home set up, ask them to invite you to become a home member, then skip to Step 2.

Download the Google Home app if you haven't already, then follow the in-app steps to set up a new home. If you already use the Home app yourself, and need to create a new home for your friend or family member, learn how to create a home.

Step 2. Migrate the network from the Google Wifi app to the Google Home app

Follow the steps to migrate the Wi-Fi network to the Google Home app. Make sure that you choose your friend or family member's home when asked which home to migrate the network to.

Step 3. Invite your friend or family member to join the home

If you created a new home in Step 1, you can now add your friend or family member to the home that you created by inviting them. This will let them control their Wi-Fi network in the future, and if they have other compatible devices like speakers or smart lights, they can add them to the same home.

Your friend or family member will need to download the Google Home app on an Android or iOS mobile device to get started. Make sure that they sign into the Google Home app with the Google Account that they'd like to use to control their Wi-Fi network in the future.

Step 4. Leave the home in the Google Home app (optional)

To continue to help your friend or family member manage their Wi-Fi network, you can remain a member of their home if they're comfortable with you doing so. However, bear in mind that home members in the Google Home app have full access to that home, including the ability to remove all other users, add new users and change the settings of devices in that home. It's recommended that you leave the home after you help migrate someone else's Wi-Fi network.
