Use Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi devices on the same network

If you have both Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi devices, you have a few different setup options. The option you should choose depends on which Wifi devices you have and, if you have multiple routers, which you want to act as your primary router.

OnHub devices cannot be added to the Google Home app.

Step 1: Select the Google Nest Wifi device(s) you have

Step 2: Choose your Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi network setup path

If you have a Nest Wifi router, you can do either of the following:

(Recommended) Option 1: Set up a new network with Nest Wifi as your primary router

For the best possible Wi-Fi range and network speed, we recommend using your Nest Wifi router as the primary point in your combined Wi-Fi network. You can then add Google Wifi and/or Google Nest Wifi points to the new Nest Wifi network for additional Wi-Fi coverage.

Note: This option will reset any settings and rules you’ve set up on your existing Google Wifi network. If you don’t want to lose settings like Family Wi-Fi schedules or custom port forwards, skip to Option 2: Add Nest Wifi router to an existing Google Wifi network.

Instructions

Step 1: Create a home (1st time Google Home users)

While connected to your existing Google Wifi network, download the Google Home app Google Home app and create a home.

  1. Download the latest version of the Google Home app available on Android or iOS.
  2. If this is your first time using the Google Home app, create a home.

Step 2: Factory reset your Google Wifi network

To add a Google Wifi device to your new network, you will need to factory reset the device.

Resetting your Google Wifi point from the Google Wifi app will delete all settings and data from your Wifi points, Cloud services, and the Google Wifi app. It will also remove your Google Wifi point(s) from your Google Account.

  1. Open the Google Wifi app.
  2. Tap Settings and actions tab and then Network & general.
  3. Under “Network,” tap Wifi point(s).
  4. Tap Factory Reset. On the next screen, confirm by tapping Factory Reset. This will remove the Google Wifi point from the Google Wifi app.
  5. The Wifi point(s) will flash blue then turn solid blue. This process can take up to 10 minutes. You will not be able to add your Wifi point(s) to your new network until it has finished resetting.
  6. Once complete, the app will say “Reset is complete,” and your Google Wifi point(s) will slowly pulse blue to indicate that it's ready for setup.

Step 3: Create a new Nest Wifi network:

  1. Choose a location for your Nest Wifi router.
    • Your router will need to be connected to a working modem that is connected to the Internet.
    • For the strongest signal, place your router at eye level, in plain view, like on a shelf or TV stand.
    • Learn more about where to place your router.
  2. On your Google Wifi primary point, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the WAN port then connect the Ethernet cable to your Nest Wifi router’s WAN port . The cable should now be connected between your Google Nest Wifi router’s WAN port and your modem.
  3. Plug your Nest Wifi router into a power outlet. After about a minute, the light will pulse white to indicate that it’s on and ready for setup.
  4. On your phone or tablet, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  5. Tap Add  and then Set up device.
  6. Under “New devices,” tap Set up new devices in your home.
  7. Choose a home.
  8. Select your Nest Wifi router.
  9. Choose Create new network.
  10. Scan the QR code on the bottom of your device.
    • Hold your phone about 5 inches (12 cm) away to scan. Learn more tips for scanning QR codes.
    • If you’re unable to scan the QR code, tap Continue without scanning, then enter the setup key on the bottom of your device.
  11. Select a room for your router or create a new one.
  12. Give your Wi-Fi network a name and a secure password.
  13. The router will now create your Wi-Fi network. This may take a few minutes.
  14. If you’re ready to add your Google Wifi device or an additional Nest Wifi device to this new network, tap Yes to continue in the app, or else follow the steps below to add a point at a later time.

Option 2: Add Nest Wifi router to an existing Google Wifi network

With this option, you’ll add your Nest Wifi router as an add-on point to extend the coverage of your existing Google Wifi network. This option doesn’t take advantage of the improved range and speed of the Nest Wifi router, but it allows you to keep your current Wi-Fi network settings and custom schedules. You’ll need to add your Google Wifi device and settings to the Google Home app.

Note: OnHub devices are not compatible with Google Nest Wifi devices. If your existing network contains an OnHub device, you’ll need to factory reset your devices and create a new network in the Google Home app. Follow the instructions for Option 1: Set up a new network with Nest Wifi router as your primary router.
