Share a home & devices in the Google Home app

Important: If you use the Nest app and haven’t migrated to a Google Account, you manage homes and people who share access to your home with the Nest app.

To organize and manage your devices in the Google Home app, you can create a home. You can invite home members who shares control of the home and its devices. For example, you can put your grouped living room speakers, office lights, and thermostat into a home and invite your family to be members of that home.

Create a home
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings Settings and then Add Add.
  3. Select Home.
  4. Follow the on screen steps.

Tip:You can have up to 5 homes in your account.

Switch between homes
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites  and then Name of the current home.
  3. From the drop-down, select a new home.
    • If the drop-down icon doesn’t appear, it means you only have one home in the Home app.
Move a device to a different home
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home you want to edit.
  4. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  5. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  6. Tap Settings Settings and then Device information and then Home.
    • If Device information isn't an option, tap Home.
  7. Tap the home you want to move the device to and then Next and then Move device.
  8. If asked, tap the room you want to move the device to and then Next.

Some devices can be moved to a different home this way:

  • Speakers, displays, and Chromecast can be moved.
  • Some Nest and Wifi devices can't be moved to a different home.
  • If you move a Charging Speaker Dock to another home, you need to move your Google Pixel Tablet to that home too.
Tip: If you have a device that can't be moved to a different home, you need to factory reset your device and set it up again in a new home.
Rename a device
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  3. Tap your device's tile.
  4. Tap Settings Settings.
  5. Tap Name.
  6. Enter a new name for your device.
  7. Tap Save.
Rename a home
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings Settings.
  3. Tap Home and then Home nickname.
  4. Enter the new name for your home.
  5. Tap Save.
Delete a home

Important: You can delete a home from the Google Home app if you’re the only home member.

If you aren’t the only member of a home, from the home with the Google Home app, you first need to remove all other members. Otherwise, you can only remove yourself from the home and the remaining home members still have access to the home and its devices.

When you delete a home:

  • The home is removed from your Google Account.
  • You can't use the Google Home app to control devices you added to a particular home unless you set those devices up again in a new home.This includes:
    • Lights
    • Displays
    • Speakers
    • Cameras
    • Thermostats
  • Locks Data associated with the home, such as video history from Nest cameras you might own or thermostat settings is deleted.

Tip: Data associated with your Google Account isn’t deleted if you delete your home. Learn how to remove data associated with your account.

To delete a home:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, tap the down arrow .
  4. Select the home you want to edit.
  5. Tap Settings Settings.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and then Delete this home .
  7. Tap Delete home.

Create & manage rooms

Create a new room
  1. ​​​​​​Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices and then Your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings Settings and then Device information and then Placement.
    • If Device information isn't an option, tap Placement.
  4. Select a suggested room name or scroll to the bottom.
  5. Tap Add a custom room.
Rename a room
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home with the room you want to rename.
  4. Tap Settings Settings and then Devices, groups & rooms.
  5. Tap the name of the room you want to change.
  6. Tap Name and thenEnter a name and then Save.
Delete a room
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home with the room you want to delete.
  4. Tap Settings Settings and then Devices, groups & rooms.
  5. Tap the name of the room you want to delete.
  6. Tap Delete room.

Tip: When you delete a room, any devices in the room are also removed from the room. You can add the devices to a different room.

Manage home members

To let other people, like family members or roommates, use the devices in your home, add them as home members.

Only invite people you trust to become home members. When someone becomes a member of a home, the following info and settings are shared with them:

Full access and control of devices & services

  • Add and remove other home members, including you.
  • Add new devices, like speakers, displays, or smart light bulbs.
  • Use and change the settings of the devices in the home.
  • Automatically link their media services, like YouTube, to speakers, smart displays, and Chromecast built-in devices in the home.

Home activity

  • View activities and events from all devices and services linked to the home.

Contact information & home address

  • Change the address of the home.
  • View the names and email addresses of everyone in the home.

Assistant features

  • Set up personal results, Voice Match, and Face Match on existing and new Assistant-supported devices.

Tip: Only the primary user of a Pixel Tablet can set up Voice Match and personal results.

You can't invite anyone using a:

  • Google Workspace formerly G Suite account
  • Google Account for children under 13 or the applicable age in your country or region.

A maximum of 6 people can share a home.

Invite members to a home
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home you want to edit.
  4. Tap Settings Settings icon and then Add Add and then Home member.
  5. Enter the name or email address of the person you want to invite to your home.
  6. Tap Next.
    • The person you invite should receive an email with instructions.
  7. Tap Next.
    • Review the person’s access to your home.
  8. Tap Send.
  9. If your Google Family Group isn’t full and the person you’re inviting isn’t already in one, you should get the option to invite them to your Google Family Group.
    • To invite them, tap Add to Family.
    • To skip this step, tap No Thanks.

The person you invite should receive an email with instructions.

Tips:

  • You can have up to 6 members in a Google Family Group.
  • If the person you want to invite has already requested to join your home, instead of sending a new invitation, you need to accept that request.
Accept someone's request to join your home

When someone sends a request to join your home, you should receive an email with the invite request and a notification on your mobile device.

  1. Follow the link in the email you received or tap the notification on your mobile device.
  2. Choose an option:
    • To invite a person to join your home, tap Continue.
      • You should find information about what’s shared when you add someone to your home.
    • To reject their request, tap Decline.
  3. To continue, tap Next.
  4. Review the person’s access to your home.
  5. Tap Send.
  6. If the person you’re inviting isn’t already in your family group, you're asked if you’d like to add them. To invite them to your family group, tap Add to Family.
    • To skip this step, tap No Thanks.

Tip: You can have a maximum of 6 members in a family group. If you already have a full family group, this option doesn't appear.

Accept a home member invitation
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites  and then Inbox .
  3. Tap your pending invitation.
  4. Follow the in-app instructions to join someone’s home.
    • To accept, tap Next.
    • To reject, tap Decline.
  5. Review what’s shared when you join a home.
  6. Tap Agree.
  7. Create a nickname for the home.
    • Tip: This nickname only appears to you.
  8. The next time you connect to the home’s Wi-Fi, to finish Google Assistant setup, open the Home app Google Home app which adds you to the devices connected to the same Wi-Fi.

To let the Google Assistant read or show results specific to you, you can choose to set up Voice Match and Face Match and choose to turn on personal results.

Remove yourself from a home

When you remove yourself from a home:

  • You no longer have access to the home and the devices and services associated with that home.
  • Other members continue to have access to the home.
  • Other members should no longer have access to the devices or services you set up, including Nest thermostats, alarms, locks or cameras. If you set up a Nest Cam with your Nest Hub Max, the Nest Hub Max won’t be available.

    Exceptions: The following devices should still be available to other home members even if you remove yourself from the home.
    • Google Pixel Tablet
    • Google Nest Wifi
    • Google Wifi
    • Assistant-enabled speakers and displays
    • Chromecast
  • You no longer have access to Nest Aware features, including video history.
  • Other members continue to have access to Nest Aware features.
  • Your Google TV account isn't removed from this home.
    • You have to sign out of this account on this home’s Google TVs or in account.google.com under Security and then Your devices.
  • If you’re the only member of the home, the home gets deleted, including home data such as video history footage and thermostat settings.

To remove yourself:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home you want to edit.
  4. Tap Settings Settings.
  5. Under the home name, tap the profile icons of home members.
  6. Select your profile icon.
  7. At the top right, tap Remove and then Leave home.
Remove other members from a home

When you remove members from a home:

  • They’re notified that they were removed from the home.
  • Their account isn't linked to the devices and they won’t have access to the devices or services in the home. Learn more about FAQs on Privacy: Google Nest.
  • Assistant-enabled devices such as Google Pixel Tablet and Nest speakers and displays, including those set up by the removed member, should remain in your home. These devices are no longer linked to the home member you removed.

    Exception: Video history footage could be deleted and Nest Hub Max might get removed.
  • They no longer have access to Nest Aware features, including video history.
  • Your Google TV account isn't removed from this home.
    • You have to sign out of this account on this home’s Google TVs or in account.google.com under Security and then Your devices.
  • If the member you remove from the home migrated their Nest Account and Nest devices like cameras and thermostats to a Google Account, those devices may be removed from the home. Data associated with their Nest devices and the home may be permanently deleted, including video history footage and thermostat settings.

To remove other members:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. If you have more than one home, tap Favorites .
  3. At the top, select the home you want to edit.
  4. Tap Settings Settings.
  5. Under the home name, tap the profile icons of home members.
  6. Select the profile icon of the home member you want to remove.
  7. At the top right, tap Remove and then Remove.

Set your home, work & other location

You can set your personal locations then ask Google Assistant for commute times and traffic updates. If you already have a personal location in Google Maps, you’ll find it in Settings.

Important: You must use Google Assistant in English and in the US to set personal locations besides home and work.

Add, change, or delete a location

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You and then Your places.
  3. Add, change, or delete an address.

Tip: You can also ask the Google Assistant to set your home and work locations.

Allow Google Assistant to use your device's current location

When you give Google Assistant permission to use your current location, you'll get more helpful results when you ask for local info like weather or restaurants nearby.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Google app icon .
  2. Tap App info Info and then Permissions and then Location.
  3. Choose a location access option.

Tip: To get certain notifications when the Google Assistant app isn’t open, set location access to Allow all the time.

Create a Routine that uses location as a starter

To create a Routine that uses location as a starter, you need to allow the Google Assistant app location and notification permissions.

Location permissions

Important:

  • If you’re having trouble getting your Routine to work, try increasing the radius of the starter up to 500 m.
  • When your mobile battery is low, the location starter Routine doesn't start as reliably as when the battery is full.
  • Your battery may drain faster if location sharing is enabled with routines.
  • It takes a few minutes for the Routine to execute once you arrive at or leave from the chosen location.
  • If Location Based Triggering isn't working, try to restart your phone.

Google app’s location permission

  1. On your Android device, touch and hold the Google app.
  2. Tap Permissions and then Location.

Tip: If you turn on both “Allow all the time” background location and “Use precise location,” permission is considered as on.

Turn on device location

  1. On your Android device, open Settings.
  2. Tap Location.

Tip: If you turn on “Use location,” permission is considered as on.

Age-Appropriate Design Code (AADC) consent

Important: This feature is for UK users only.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google app.
  2. At the top right, tap your profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings and then Privacy and Security and then Precise location.

Tip: If you turn on “Always,” permission is considered as on.

Notification permissions

  1. On your Android device, touch and hold the Google app.
  2. Tap Notifications.

Tip: If you turn on “All Google notifications,” permission is considered as on.
