Moving guide for Nest devices

If you need to move your Nest device to a new house or apartment, this article will show you how to leave behind a Nest device for the next resident to use, bring a Nest device to your new home, or set up a device left behind by a previous resident. Find your device below to get started.

Speakers and displays

 Leave a device for the next resident

To give a device to another person, first perform a factory reset:

  1. Open the Google Home app .

  2. Tap and hold your device's tile.

  3. Tap Settings  and then Remove device and then Remove.​

  4. Perform a factory reset. A factory reset will reset your speaker or display to its default factory settings.

Note: This action will clear your data from the device and can't be undone.

Bring a device to your new home

If you're changing your Wi-Fi network

If you want to bring your speaker or display to a new home, and you have a new Wi-Fi router or Internet Service Provider (ISP), follow the steps to change the Wi-Fi network of your Google speaker or display.

If your router and Wi-Fi network will stay the same

Once you've set up your Wi-Fi network in your new home, plug in your speaker or display. It will automatically connect to your network and be ready to use.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

If you decide to use a speaker or display left by its previous owner, follow these steps:

  1. Perform a factory reset if it hasn't already been done.

  2. Set up your speaker or display in the Google Home app.

 Leave a device for the next resident

To give a device to another person, follow the instructions below. If you have a Nest Aware subscription, make sure you cancel your subscription.

  1. Open the Google Home app .

  2. Tap and hold your device's tile.

  3. Tap Settings  and then Remove device and then Remove.​

  4. Perform a factory reset. A factory reset will reset your thermostat, doorbell, or camera to its default factory settings.

Note: This action will clear your data from the device and can't be undone.

Bring a device to your new home

If your Wi-Fi network will change

If you want to bring your thermostat to a new house or apartment, and you have a new Wi-Fi router or Internet Service Provider (ISP), follow the steps to connect your thermostat to the new Wi-Fi network.

If your router and Wi-Fi network will stay the same

Once you've set up your Wi-Fi network in your new home, install your thermostat. It will automatically connect to your network and be ready to use.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

  1. Perform a factory reset on your device if it hasn't been done already.

  2. Set up your device:

To give a device to another person, follow the instructions below:

  1. Remove device from the Nest app.

  2. Perform a factory reset on your device using the links below. This will delete all of your personal information from the product and let the new resident add it to their account in the Nest app.

If you want to bring your product to your next home, use the steps in the following article to move a Nest product to a different home.

Set up a device left by a previous resident

  1. Perform a factory reset on your device if it hasn't been done already.

  2. Set up your device in the Nest app:

Important: If you try to set up your Nest camera and get a message that says it's already in use by another account, you'll need to wait for the camera's current video history to expire before you can add it to your account. This can take up to 60 days, but may happen sooner.
