AdSense and Ad Exchange for DFP Video

An AdSense or Ad Exchange property code is required to create an AdSense or Ad Exchange line item. To learn more, contact your account manager.

Step 1: Enter the property code in DFP

  1. Sign in to DoubleClick for Publishers.
  2. Click Admin and then Global settings.
  3. Click Link an AdSense account if you have an AdSense for video or games property code, or Link an Ad Exchange account for Ad Exchange for video.
    • The email address for the account must have API access. (This email address might be different from the billing email.) You can find the correct email address in your AdSense or Ad Exchange account under Account settings and then Access and authorization and then Users with sign-in access.
  4. Enter the required information, then click SAVE.

An email is sent requesting confirmation that you want to link accounts. Once you verify, changes are reflected immediately. If changes are not reflected, sign out of DFP and sign in again after 15-20 minutes.

Step 2: Create a new video line item

  1. On the Delivery tab, choose between the following:
  2. Name the line item.
  3. Select Video VAST, and enter the master and companion sizes. Learn more
  4. In the Type drop-down menu:
    • Select AdSense or Ad Exchange, depending on which property code you’d like to utilize for this line item (requires the use of the IMA SDK).
    • Select Price priority if you want AdSense or Ad Exchange to compete with other video ad providers on price.
  5. Enter your remaining line item settings, then click Save. Learn more

Step 3: Add creatives

For AdSense line items

  1. In the AdSense line item, click Add creative sets and then NEW CREATIVE SET.
  2. Name the creative.
  3. Optional: Enter one or more channel IDs from the custom channels section of your AdSense for video or games account. DFP appends the channels to the tag.
  4. Select the Format for your creatives.
    • Video: A linear ad. Options include TrueView in-stream and standard video.
      • In either case, enter a Maximum duration for the ads (whole numbers only, no decimals).
Line items do not serve to requests specifying a max duration if one is not set.

Also, if you are specifying a maximum duration for each ad (for example, using standard pods), the maximum of either the skippable max duration or the standard max duration needs to be smaller than the max duration of each ad in the pod for backfill to be triggered.

This ensures that the maximum pod duration is not exceeded by a skippable or a standard ad that might be returned from Ad Exchange.

    • Overlay: A non-linear ad that covers part of the video content as it plays. Options include text or image.
  5. Click SAVE.

For Ad Exchange line items

  1. In the Ad Exchange line item, click Add creative sets and then new creative set.
  2. Name the creative.
  3. (Optional and not available for all networks) Ad Exchange rules targeting DFP inventory is recommended, instead of the following. See the best practices for trafficking Ad Exchange in DFP.
    • Enter one or more channel IDs from the custom channels section of your Ad Exchange for video account. DFP appends the channels to the tag.
    • Enter the slotname from the tags section of your Ad Exchange for video account as the Ad Exchange tag ID.
The slot id text box must contain the slot ids in hierarchical format if there is a nested tag hierarchy in Ad Exchange (for example: 1111111/222222/333333).
  4. Select the Format for your creatives.
    • Video: A linear ad that requires a Maximum duration for the ads (whole numbers only, no decimals).
    • Overlay: A non-linear ad that covers part of the video content as it plays. Options include text or image.
  5. Click SAVE.

For Ad Exchange line items, append the description_url parameter to DFP tags. This is mandatory for publishers using Network Partner Management. The description URL is compared to an NPM publisher's list of classified domains to see if ads are eligible to serve. If the description URL doesn't match a classified domain, no ads serve.

The description URL is used to categorize and rate the content on the page. It should be a video-specific URL (not the domain for all ad requests). Advertisers can see the content's category (vertical) and rating (G, Teen, Mature, and Not Rated).

    For example:

    http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad&s?sz=640x480&iu=/NetworkID/AdUnit&ciu_szs&impl=s
    &gdfp_req=1&env=vp&output=xml_vast2&unviewed_position_start=1
    &url=referrer_url]&correlator=[timestamp]
    &description_url=http%3A%2F%2FMySite.com%2Fvideo_description_page.html

  6. (Optional) Review individual Ad Exchange ads and choose whether to let them show on your pages.
