Fix a problem with HTML5 ads

When creating HTML5 ads, it's possible that you may experience a problem. Below is a list of common issues that might occur when creating custom HTML ads, and how to fix them.

Click-through issues

  • If you're using Google Web Designer and not able to click from the shareable link preview to the landing page, this might be an issue with the Tap Area component. Make sure that you're using "Google Ad" -> "Exit" when defining the event of the Tap Area component. If you're using "Exit ad (override URL)" instead, it won't work properly.
  • If your non-Google Web Designer ad isn't clicking through, make sure that you've correctly implemented the exit api.
    • HTML5 ads that aren't created in Google Web Designer are clickable on the entire area of the ad by default. If you wish to limit the clickable area to specific elements, then you'll need to include the exitapi.js script.
    • To use exitapi.js, include the following script in your HTML <head> tag:
    • <script type="text/javascript" src="https://tpc.googlesyndication.com/pagead/gadgets/html5/api/exitapi.js"> </script>
    • Then make the following JavaScript call to enable your final URL:
    • ExitApi.exit()
    • For example, send a consumer to the final URL, using a standard anchor:
    • <a onclick="ExitApi.exit()">Click Here!</a>
    • If you don't include the extiapi.js script, AdWords will make the entire ad clickable, and you won't need the exit() call.
    • For ads created in Google Web Designer, you don’t need to add this script.

Other Issues

  • Issue: Creatives is missing text.
    • Must use UTF-8 for Non-ASCII characters. Make sure the encoding is UTF-8.
  • Issue: Preview doesn't click through.
    • Fully functioning preview is only available via the "View full size ad" link after saving the ad.
    • Clients must then copy/paste the URL in their browser.
    • Creatives will not click through in the ad creation preview or the "View full size ad" preview pop-up.

ExitAPI included? ExitAPI.exit() called? What triggers the click?
No No The entire ad
No Yes Nothing. A Javascript error would occur.
Yes No Nothing. No click event is defined.
Yes Yes Whatever calls ExitAPI.exit()

Note

You can’t preview a creative using 'touchstart/touchend' instead of ‘click’ using the normal Google Web Designer preview. Instead, enable device emulation in order to test it as though it was on a mobile or tablet device.
