Show your ads on Gmail

If you're advertising on the Google Display Network, your text ads could appear on Gmail. Gmail can show your ads when your keywords match words used in a person's Gmail messages or if you've added Gmail as a placement to your ad group.

Add Gmail as a placement to your ad group

You can add Gmail as a managed placement to ad groups in your "Display Network only – All features" campaigns.

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at https://adwords.google.com.au.
  2. Click the Campaigns tab at the top.
  3. Go to your Display Network tab and click + Targeting, which is located above the graph.
  4. Select an ad group from one of your "Display Network only – All features" campaigns.
  5. Click the "Add targeting" drop-down menu and select "Placements".
  6. Click the "Add multiple placements at once" link.
  7. Type mail.google.com in the text box. Note: To add the section right above Gmail messages as an ad placement, type mail.google.com::Inbox,Top center in the text box. Remember that the format for this placement is all one line.
  8. Click Close and then Save to add the placement to your ad group.

Tips for showing ads on Gmail

Show ads next to relevant Gmail messages

You can add keywords to your ad group to help your ads appear next to email messages relevant to what you're advertising.

  1. Go to your Display Network tab and click + Targeting, which is located above the graph.
  2. Select an ad group.
  3. Click the "Add targeting" drop-down menu and select "Display keywords."
  4. Add display keywords to target your ads to more relevant messages in Gmail.
  5. Click Close and then Save.
Increase your bids to win more auctions

You can increase your Gmail placement bid to potentially win more auctions and get more impressions and traffic as a result. If you add Gmail as a managed placement but leave the bid the same, your performance might not improve.

  1. Select an ad group.
  2. Go to your Display Network tab and click your Placements tab.
  3. Locate mail.google.com.au in your list of placements.
  4. Click and edit your bid. Tip: Increase it so that it's higher than your ad group default bid.
Make a Gmail-specific campaign

Consider making a Gmail-specific campaign. Then, exclude mail.google.com.au from your other Display Network campaigns so that those campaigns don't take traffic away from your Gmail-specific campaign.
