Add a video creative set to an advertiser

Video features might not be enabled for your network. For more information, talk to your account manager.

When you add a video creative set directly to an advertiser, the creative set is available to be added to line items later.

To add a video creative set to an advertiser:

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Click Delivery and then Creatives and then Creative sets and then New creative set.
  3. Select an advertiser and Video VAST.
  4. Enter a master video size. The letter "v" indicates that the listed sizes are video sizes.
  5. Optional: To include companion ads in this creative set, enter one or more companion sizes.
    • You can also  include companion ads during line item trafficking. (It isn't possible to add companions in the creative library once you've saved the creative set.)
    • If you specify a companion size, the size isn't associated with the creative set until you save a companion asset of that size.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Select one of the following creative set types:

    A video creative appears as a pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll.

    1. Select Video.
    2. Enter a creative set name.
    3. Enter a creative Name and Click-through URL.
    4. Enter a Duration that matches the duration of the video assets, within two seconds. If the difference is more than two seconds, override this requirement by selecting the checkbox labeled "Allow creative duration to differ from asset duration."
    5. Optional: Enter a survey URL, a type of third-party tracking URL.
    6. Select a hosting option.
    Ad Manager-hosted assets

Ad Manager supports most common video formats. Learn about video upload and transcoding.

If you click SAVE or otherwise navigate away from the page while the video is uploading, you'll cancel the upload and you'll need to start over.
    • Drag and drop a file to the gray highlighted area, or click Or upload a new asset. The upload begins immediately. Refer to file size limits in the Video ad serving information sheet.
When you upload a video creative to Ad Manager, it is transcoded. Due to the nature of the transcoding process, the video length may not necessarily be the same as the original. If you rely on an exact video length, use the length after transcoding.
    • After the file uploads successfully, transcoding begins. If you click Save, transcoding continues in the background. To see the status of transcoding, return to this page and check the Assets table.

If you have multiple assets, each with a different bitrate or format, repeat these steps for each asset.

    Externally-hosted assets

If you add multiple asset URLs in one step, Ad Manager extracts the metadata for all of them.

    • Click Add assets.
    • Enter the URLs for the externally hosted assets, one per line. If a URL contains spaces, replace the spaces with %20. You can add a maximum of 40 URLs at a time.
    • Click Save. Metadata is extracted and displayed for each asset.

If metadata cannot be extracted, assets are displayed in the table, but with blank values. You’ll need to enter required metadata in the table before assets can be saved on the main page.

    YouTube-hosted assets

You can quickly add YouTube-hosted assets by entering the applicable URL or searching YouTube.

    1. Click YouTube-hosted.
    2. Enter a YouTube URL or choose Or import from YouTube and search for the video.
    3. Click Save. The YouTube URL and the video's duration (in seconds) are displayed.

These assets should play back the same creative. To assign different creative variations to a line item, use multiple creative sets.

Overlay creative sets are an image ad that covers part of the content in a video player.

    1. Select Overlay, then select Image.
    2. Name the creative set and the creative.
    3. Upload an image file or click the link to Use a remote image.
    4. Enter the Click-through URL, and click Test to test it.

Redirect creative sets include a redirect ad, containing one or more video ads and/or overlay ads, that point to a third-party ad server. This creative set type requires the VAST tag provided by the advertiser.

    1. Select Redirect.
    2. Enter a creative set name.
    3. For the creative:
      • Select the Redirect type (video, overlay, or both video and overlay).
      • Name the creative.
      • Enter the VAST tag URL provided by the advertiser.

If you're using the Google IMA SDK, and the VAST Redirect ad tag URL includes the "?" character, the SDK encodes everything following the "?" character, which can cause the ad tag URL not to work properly.

      • Click Test to test the URL.
      • Enter the Duration of the creative. This field doesn't change dynamically based on the VAST inline ad.
  8. Optional steps for any creative type:
    • Apply frequency cap labels.

    • Add custom parameters, which are represented in the AdParameters section of VAST and picked up by the SDK.
      • For all except VPAID creatives, enter custom parameters as key-value pairs, separated by commas (key=value, key=value).
      • For VPAID creatives, the custom parameter is a string (not key-value pairs), and is passed to the creative from the SDK.
    • Add an Ad ID that is four letters followed by seven or eight numbers or letters. For example, ABCD123456EF. Learn more
    • Enter third-party tracking URLs. You can enter multiple URLs for each type of tracking, except for Survey, Custom click and Click tracking.
    • Enter information about companion creatives. Select the creative type, then enter the required information.

      Companion creative types
      • Image: A basic image creative. Requires a GIF, JPG, or PNG file.
      • Third-party HTML: A highly customizable, interactive creative. Use custom HTML, JavaScript snippets, and tags from a third-party ad server or Campaign Manager.
      • Custom code snippet: All of the options of third-party HTML, plus the ability to upload files. Use any number of files, custom HTML, JavaScript snippets, and tags from a third-party ad server or Campaign Manager. Use a source URL (iFrameResource) or HTML (HTMLResource).
      • Ad Manager tag: A creative hosted by Ad Manager. The creative requires a URL and appears in VAST as an HTMLResource with the contents of the tag.

The code snippet for Ad Manager tag companions might include the ]]> character sequence, which is not allowed in the CDATA block. As a workaround, traffic Ad Manager tag companions using the Third-party HTML companion type, and select the Use URL option.

      • Custom template: A creative defined by a pre-existing template. Templates may be created by both Google and your organization for your use.
      • Add existing creative: Search for and add existing creatives of the specified companion size.
  9. Click Save.
