Migrate your Google Wifi devices to the Google Home app

If you previously set up Google Wifi or OnHub devices in the Google Wifi app, adding your devices and settings to the Google Home app will allow you to:

  • Manage your Google Wifi network from the Google Home app
  • Use the Google Assistant to do things like pause Wi-Fi, check your internet speed, and show your guest Wi-Fi password on Nest displays
  • Add a Nest Wifi point to an existing Google Wifi network
  • Add a Nest Wifi router as an add-on point to an existing Google Wifi network*

*In this case, we recommend following the steps to add your Google Wifi device to a new Google Nest Wifi network instead.

Before you begin

Migrating your Google Wifi and OnHub devices and settings to the Google Home app is not reversible.

Once you migrate your Wifi devices to the Google Home app, you’ll be able to do things like update your network settings, manage parental controls, and run speed tests in either the Google Home or the Google Wifi app. However, migrating your Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app does change some things:

  • You’ll need to use the Google Home app to rename Wifi devices and change the room of Wifi devices.
  • Existing managers in the Google Wifi app will be removed. Instead, you’ll need to add others as Google Home app home members in order to give them access to your Wi-Fi and device settings. You'll no longer be able to change managers in the Google Wifi app.
  • You’ll need to set up any additional Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, or OnHub devices in the Google Home app.
  • All members of the Google Home app (including existing and future members) will have the same level of control and access to your Wifi devices and settings as you.

Note: OnHub devices cannot be combined with Nest Wifi devices even after migrating OnHub to the Google Home app.

Wifi devices and settings

After you add your Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app, the devices, network settings, and info from your Google Wifi app will also be visible in the Google Home app.

You’ll be able to access most features from both the Google Home app and Google Wifi app, but these features will only be available from the Google Home app:

  • Rename Wifi devices
  • Change the room of a Wifi device
  • New Wifi device setup
  • Change and add Wifi managers

Wifi managers

Existing managers in the Google Wifi app will be removed when you add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app. You'll also no longer be able to add or remove managers in the Google Wifi app. Instead, you’ll need to add others as Google Home app home members in order to give them access to your Wi-Fi and device settings.

Keep in mind that home members in the Google Home app will have the same level of control and access to your home devices and settings that you do. This includes the ability to change your Wi-Fi password, toggle Wi-Fi access on and off for specific devices, and add or remove other home members. Only invite people you trust to become home members.
