Fix a Pixel that freezes or won't respond

If your Pixel phone freezes, stops responding, or is stuck with the screen on, one of the steps below could fix the issue.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Restart your phone

If your phone is frozen with the screen on, hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to restart.

Troubleshoot freezing

If your phone freezes more than once, we recommend checking for a larger issue. Follow the steps for each solution below. After each step, see whether it fixed your issue.

Troubleshoot your phone for freezing

Check for Android updates

System updates can bring improvements that could fix your issue.

To check for and install system updates:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Near the bottom, tap System and then Advanced and then System update. If needed, first tap About phone or About tablet.
  3. You'll see your update status. Follow any steps on the screen.
Check storage & clear space

You could see issues if your device's internal storage is full or almost full. To free up space that your device needs to work properly, you can remove unnecessary files and clear cached data.

To check how much storage your device has:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. See how much storage you have available. Your device can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free.

If you're running low on storage, learn how to free up space.

Check for app updates

App updates can bring improvements that could fix your issue.

To see and get updates for your apps:

  1. Open your device's Play Store app Google Play.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then My apps & games.
  3. Apps with available updates are labeled "Update."
    • If an update is available, tap Update.
    • If more updates are available, tap Update all.
Close apps you're not using

In general, you don't need to close apps. Android manages the memory that apps use.

But to completely shut down an app, including any background services that it may be using:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications and then the app. If needed, tap App info before the app.
  3. Tap Force stop.

Tip: To help see which apps cause problems, make a list of which apps you force stop.

See if an app is causing the problem

The problem could be caused by an app that you downloaded. To see whether a downloaded app is causing the problem, you can restart your device in safe mode.

Safe mode temporarily turns off all downloaded apps.

To restart in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold your device's Power button.
  2. On your screen, touch and hold Power off Power. Tap OK.
  3. After you see "Safe mode" at the bottom of your screen, wait to see if the problem goes away.

If your problem doesn't go away in safe mode

Restart your device and skip to the next section.

If your problem goes away in safe mode

A downloaded app is most likely causing your issue. To find out which app it is:

  1. To exit safe mode, restart your device.
  2. One by one, uninstall recently downloaded apps. After each removal, restart your device. See whether removing that app solved the problem.
  3. After you remove the app that's causing the problem, you can reinstall the other apps that you removed.

Still having freezing issues?

Consider resetting your phone to factory settings

To remove any processes on your device that could be causing the issue, you can reset your device to factory settings.

IMPORTANT: A factory data reset will remove all data from your device. While any data stored in your Google Account will be restored, all apps and their associated data will be uninstalled. Before you perform a factory data reset, we recommend backing up your device.

If an app that you downloaded caused the issue and you reinstall that app, the problem could come back.
