Reset your Pixel phone to factory settings

You can remove data from your Pixel phone by resetting it to factory settings. Resetting this way is also called "formatting" or doing a "hard reset."

Important: A factory reset erases all your data from your phone.

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Get ready to factory reset

Step 1: Know the Google Account username & password for your Pixel phone

To restore your data after resetting, you'll need to enter security information. Entering the information shows that you or someone you trust did the reset.

Make sure you have the security information before you reset your Pixel phone.

  1. Be sure you know a Google Account on your Pixel phone.
    1. Open your phone's Settings app Settings app.
    2. Tap Accounts. If needed, also tap Google.
    3. See the username.
  2. Be sure you know the password for the Google Account on the phone. If you don't remember the password, get sign-in help.
  3. If you've set a screen lock, be sure you know your phone's PIN, pattern, or password. If you can't unlock your phone, learn what you can do.

Tip: If you recently reset your Google Account password, wait 24 hours before performing a factory reset.

Step 2: Back up your data to your Google Account

A factory data reset will erase all your data from your Pixel phone.

  • All apps and their data will be uninstalled.
  • Data stored in your Google Account can be restored.

Step 3: Plug in & connect

A factory reset can take up to an hour.

  1. Plug in your Pixel phone to charge. Keep it plugged in until the reset completes.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi or a mobile network. You'll need to be connected when the reset completes.

Factory reset your Pixel phone

  1. Open your phone's Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Advanced and then Reset options.
  3. Tap Erase all data (factory reset) and then Reset phone. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  4. To erase all data from your phone's internal storage, tap Erase everything.
  5. When your phone has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.
