Make calls with Google Duo

You can use Google Duo to make video or voice calls. All calls are made through your mobile data plan or a WiFi connection. Calls don't use your mobile minutes. If you use your mobile data, charges may apply.

Before you begin

Set up Google Duo

Start a video or voice call

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the top, search contacts or dial a number.
  3. Tap the contact or number to call.
  4. Optional: Your video is on by default. Tap Video  to turn your video off or on.
  5. Tap Call.

Start a group video call

You can have up to 32 participants in a group video call on Google Duo.

Create a group

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the bottom right, tap New call and then Create group.
  3. Choose your contacts.
  4. Tap Done and then Start Video call.

Tip: You can name the group. Tap Edit Edit, enter a name, and tap Save. The name appears for everyone in the group.

Share a link to start a group call

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the bottom right, tap New call and then Create group.
  3. Choose your contacts.
  4. Tap Done.
  5. To share the link or add contacts, tap Copy Copy or Share Share.
    • If the recipient clicks the link on a computer, it opens duo.google.com.
    • If the recipient taps the link on mobile and Google Duo is installed, the Google Duo app opens.
    • If the recipient taps the link on mobile and Google Duo isn’t installed, the link opens Google Duo in Google Play or the App Store.
  6. Tap Start.

Call an existing group or join a live group call

Important: Child accounts can join a group only if at least one of their contacts is in the group.

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the bottom right, tap New call.
  3. Under “Groups,” call a group or join a live group. If “Live” appears under the group name, the call is live and you can join.
    • To call an existing group: Tap the group name or participants and then Start video call.
    • To join a live group call: Tap the group name or participants and then Join video call.

Rename a group, add members, reset a group link, or leave a group

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the bottom right, tap New call.
  3. Under “Groups,” tap a group and then More options "".
  4. Choose an option and follow the instructions on the screen.

Tip: You can use Siri shortcuts with Duo. Learn how to add, remove, or change Siri shortcuts.

Suspicious groups

If you get a group invite that includes blocked accounts or people outside your contacts, Google Duo marks the group as suspicious. Google Duo won’t give you any information about group members you blocked.

You can join or decline the group. If you join, Google Duo won’t unblock people you blocked.

Remove a group member

  1. Open the Google Duo app Duo.
  2. At the bottom right, tap New call.
  3. Under “Groups,” tap a group.
  4. Touch and hold the contact you want to remove.
  5. Tap Remove from group.
    • Optional: You can also block the group member.

Tip: If the person you blocked clicks the original link to rejoin the group, they get a message that the group doesn’t exist. The group link is refreshed for everyone else in the group. Learn about blocked numbers in group calls.
