Make video or voice calls with Google Meet

Important: This article is about calling in Google Meet. For meetings: Learn how to start or schedule a Google Meet video meeting.

Google Meet has been updated to include both video calling and meeting capabilities. You can now use Google Meet to make 1:1 video calls, group calls, or voice calls.

On your phone, you can also create, schedule, or join meetings. Learn how to use the new Google Meet app.

Important:

  • You need a mobile data plan or a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Calls made through mobile data plan don't use mobile minutes. Charges may apply.

Before you begin

Learn how to get started with calling in Google Meet.

Important: You can use Google Meet to make calls on your computer without your phone turned on or nearby.

Start a video or voice call

  1. On your computer, go to duo.google.com (If you are redirected away from duo.google.com , you may need to sign into Meet and then reopen duo.google.com in your browser).
  2. On the left, click Calls Camera.
  3. Select an option:
    • If the number is a saved contact:
      1. Select the contact.
      2. Click Voice call  or Video call Camera.
    • If the number isn't a saved contact:
      1. Click Start a call Camera.
      2. Enter a phone number or email.
      3. Click Voice call  or Video call Camera.

Start a group video call

You can have up to 32 participants in a group video call.

Important: You can only create group calls on Google Chrome M86+ and Microsoft Edge v79+.

Start a video call with multiple contacts

  1. On your computer, go to duo.google.com (If you are redirected away from duo.google.com , you may need to sign into Meet and then reopen duo.google.com in your browser).
  2. Click Create group link.
    • Tip: You can name the group. The name appears for everyone in the group.
      1. Next to the group name, click Edit .
      2. Enter a name.
      3. Click Save.
  3. Click Add people and then Select contacts.
  4. At the top right, click Add and then Start call Camera.

Share a link to start a group call

  1. On your computer, go to duo.google.com (If you are redirected away from duo.google.com , you may need to sign into Meet and then reopen duo.google.com in your browser).
  2. Click Create group link.
    • Tip: You can name the group. The name appears for everyone in the group.
      1. Next to the group name, click Edit .
      2. Enter a name.
      3. Click Save.
  3. At the bottom, click Copy  or Send via email .

Leave a group

  1. On your computer, go to duo.google.com (If you are redirected away from duo.google.com , you may need to sign into Meet and then reopen duo.google.com in your browser).
  2. Under "Recent activity," click the group.
  3. At the top right, click More options  and then Delete Meet calling history.
Suspicious groups
If you get a group invite that includes blocked accounts or people outside your contacts, Google Meet marks them as suspicious. Google Meet won't give you any information about group members you blocked.

You can join or decline the group. If you join, Google Meet won't unblock people you blocked.
Remove a group member
  1. On your computer, go to duo.google.com (If you are redirected away from duo.google.com , you may need to sign into Meet and then reopen duo.google.com in your browser).
  2. Under "Groups," click a group.
  3. At the top-right, click More options  and then See group members.
  4. Click the group member you want to remove.
  5. On the right, click More options  and then Remove.

Tip: You can also block the group member. If the person you blocked clicks the original link to rejoin the group, they get a message that the group doesn't exist. The group link refreshes for everyone else in the group. Learn about blocked numbers in group calls.

Meet Calls from Messages for web

  1. Go to messages.google.com.
  2. On the left, select a conversation or click Start chat.
  3. In the top right, click Video or Voice call Camera.
  4. In the new tab that opens, click Voice call  or Video call Camera.

Tip: If you don't have the video call icon Camera, video calls aren't available for that conversation.
