Add your Google Wifi settings to the Google Home app

To add a Google Nest Wifi device to an existing Google Wifi network, you’ll need to add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app. You’ll still be able to use the Google Wifi app to do things like update your network settings, manage parental controls, and run speed tests, but some device settings will only be available in the Google Home app after you add your devices and settings.

If you choose not to add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app, you’ll need to set up a new Wi-Fi network for your Google Nest Wifi devices. For instructions, see how to use Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi devices on the same network.

OnHub devices cannot be added to the Google Home app.

Why add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app

You’ll need to add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Home app if you want to do either of these:

  • Add a Google Nest Wifi point to an existing Google Wifi network
  • Add a Google Nest Wifi router as an add-on point to an existing Google Wifi network*

*In this case, we recommend adding your Google Wifi device to a new Google Nest Wifi network instead.

Before you begin

Adding your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app is not reversible. Although you’ll still be able to manage your Wi-Fi network from the Google Wifi app, adding your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app changes some things:

  • You’ll need to use the Google Home app to rename Wifi devices and change the room of Wifi devices.
  • Existing managers in the Google Wifi app will be removed. You’ll need to re-add them in the Google Home app. You'll no longer be able to change managers in the Wifi app.
  • You’ll need to set up any additional Google Wifi or Google Nest Wifi devices in the Google Home app.
  • All members of the Home app (including existing and future members) will have the same level of control and access to your Wi-Fi devices and settings as you.

Wifi devices and settings

After you add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app, the devices, network settings, and info from your Google Wifi app will also be visible in the Google Home app.

You’ll be able to access most Wi-Fi features from both the Google Wifi app and the Google Home app, but these features will only be available from the Google Home app:

  • Rename Wifi devices
  • Change the room of a Wifi device
  • New Wifi device setup
  • Change and add Wifi managers

Wifi managers

Existing managers in the Google Wifi app will be removed when you add your Google Wifi devices and settings to the Google Home app. You'll also no longer be able to add or remove managers in the Google Wifi app. Instead, you’ll need to add others as Google Home app home members in order to give them access to your Wi-Fi and device settings.

Keep in mind that home members in the Google Home app will have the same level of control and access to your home devices and settings that you do. This includes the ability to change your Wi-Fi password, toggle Wi-Fi access on and off for specific devices, and add or remove other home members. Only invite people you trust to become home members.
