Manage homes and products with the Nest app

Important: If you sign in to the Nest app with a Google Account, use the Home app to manage home members who share access to your Nest products. Keep in mind that only home members who also sign in with a Google Account can find your Nest products in the Nest app.

You can use the Nest app to add more Nest products to your home, and create another home and add products to it. You can also move products to a new home or between rooms in a home.

Home and product basics

  • You can have multiple homes in the Nest app. For instance, you can add a vacation home as a second home and your business as a third home.

  • The maximum number of homes you can have in the Nest app depends on what account you use to sign in.

    • If you sign in with a Google Account, you can have up to 5 homes in your account.

    • If you sign in with a Nest account, you can have up to 3 homes.

  • You can be the Owner of one or all homes in the app.

  • You can be invited to access one or all homes in the app. When you accept an invitation from someone to access their Nest home, that home is automatically added to the app.

  • Don't assign Nest products to the same home in the app if they're physically installed in different homes as this can cause problems when your products try to sense whether someone's home or not.

  • If you need access to more than the total number of homes allowed in an account, you can create another account. You can create or accept invitations for each of your accounts in the Nest app.

  • Some products are managed in the Nest app, and other products in the Google Home app.

    • Use the Home app to manage home members if you use a Google Account to manage your products and homes.

  • Starting June 20, 2024, custom Nest account profile pictures will no longer be supported. After this date, if you sign in with a Nest account, it won’t allow you to upload a custom profile picture. Your current custom profile picture will be removed and deleted, and the default profile picture will be used in the Nest app. If you’ve migrated to a Google Account, the Nest app will show your Google Account profile picture.

  • Some camera models can use up to 4Mbps of upload bandwidth, however you may encounter issues such as missing video history if you don't have sufficient upload bandwidth to support a large number of cameras. Likewise, video quality is dependent on your internet bandwidth usage.
  • For further information on your camera’s bandwidth usage, refer to our Help Center article on Internet bandwidth and speed requirements for Nest cameras.

Move a Nest product to another home

If you have another home, you can move your Nest products between them. When you physically move them to their new home, you also need to move them in the app.

The steps are different for each product. Select the one you want to move below.

Nest thermostat

In Europe:

  1. Make sure that the system in your new home is compatible.

  2. Reset your thermostat to defaults.

  3. Remove your thermostat from the Nest app.

  4. Because Heat Link is connected to high voltage wires, you should contact a local professional to uninstall your thermostat and reinstall it in the other home.

  5. Add your Nest thermostat back to the Nest app in the other home. Make sure you select the new home in the app before you re-add your thermostat.

Everywhere else:

  1. Make sure that the system in your new home is compatible. The wiring in your new home could also be different from the wiring in your current home. So, in addition to checking the compatibility, make sure you also get a wiring diagram before you remove anything.

  2. Reset your thermostat to defaults. It's necessary to reset your thermostat because your thermostat needs to learn about your new home's system and how quickly the home heats or cools.

  3. Remove your thermostat from the Nest app.

  4. Uninstall your thermostat.

  5. Reinstall and set it up in the new home. Make sure you select the new home in the app before you re-add your thermostat.

If you prefer, you can contact a   local professional to reinstall your thermostat for you.

Nest cameras and doorbells

If your device doesn't have a Nest Aware subscription:

  1. Remove your device from the Nest app.

  2. Uninstall your device.

  3. Install your device in its new home.

  4. Select the new home in the Nest app.

  5. Set up your device in the Nest app.

If your device has a Nest Aware subscription:

There are a few extra steps you need to take because subscriptions are attached to both your device and the home it's in.

  1. Create clips or timelapses of any footage you want to save from your device.
Important: The next step deletes your device's video history and settings, so you must do this beforehand to preserve any memories you want to keep.

  2. If your device has a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription, cancel the subscription. This step deletes your camera's video history and settings. Once you’ve canceled your 1st gen subscription, you can’t buy a new one.

  3. Remove the device from the Nest app and uninstall it.

  4. Install your device in its new home.

  5. Set up your device again with the Nest app. Make sure you select the device's new home in the app before you begin setup.

  6. If needed, purchase a Nest Aware subscription.

Important: If you purchased a pre-owned Nest device and receive a message that says it's already in use by another account, you'll need to wait for the device's current video history to expire before you can add it to your account. This can take up to 60 days, but may happen sooner.

Nest Protect

Make sure you comply with all local regulations when you install Protect in its new home.

  1. Remove Nest Protect from the Nest app.

  2. Reset your Protect and uninstall it.

  3. Install your Nest Protect in its new home.

  4. Add your Protect back to the Nest app. Make sure you select the new home in the app before you re-add it.

Nest x Yale Lock

  1. Remove the Nest × Yale Lock from the Nest app.

  2. Reset your lock to factory defaults.

  3. Uninstall your lock from the door.

Tip: You can follow the steps to physically install your lock in reverse.

  4. Install your lock in its new home, and then add it back to the Nest app.

Remove a home from the Nest app

Note: If you sign in to the Nest app with a Google Account, remove your home in the Home app. This step removes the same home from the Nest app as well.

If you're moving and leaving a Nest product behind

If you're moving to a new home and plan to leave a Nest product behind for the new homeowners, remove the product from the Nest app and reset it to factory defaults.

When you perform a factory reset, this step deletes all of your personal information from the product and lets the new homeowners add the product to the Nest app on their own phones.

  1. First, remove the product from the Nest app.

  2. Then, reset the product to factory defaults. Select the product below for more details.
