Device can't connect to my Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network

If your phone, computer, or other Wi-Fi device won’t connect to your Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network, or it keeps getting cut off, here are some reasons why:

  • Device has the wrong Wi-Fi password
  • Some device settings are turned off
  • Device is too far from the Wi-Fi or the signal is not strong enough
  • Problems with your internet or Wi-Fi network
  • Problems with the device itself

Update your password

Your device can't connect if your Wi-Fi password is wrong. This can happen if you type it incorrectly. It can also happen if someone changes the password.

Enter the correct network password on your device to fix this.

Check device settings

  • Make sure that your device’s Wi-Fi is turned on. Also, confirm that airplane mode is turned off.
    • You usually find Wi-Fi settings in your device’s Settings app. You can also swipe down from the top or up from the bottom of your screen.
  • Ensure that you select your Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network.
  • Confirm the device doesn't use a static IP address.
    • A device using a static IP address is rare. The IP should be in the IP subnet range.
  • Make sure your device is not paused in the Google Home app.

If you received a related network insight, check below for more details:

Update Wi-Fi password for [device name or number of devices]

You get this message if your Nest Wifi or Google Wifi password changed in the last 7 days, and a device then failed to connect.

This means the device tried to connect at least 5 times in the last 2 minutes. It usually means your device is still using the old password and needs the new one to connect.

Fix: Change the password on that device to your current network password.

Device or a number of devices couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi

You get this message if a device that was connected in the last 30 days is now missing from your Nest Wifi or Google Wifi network. This also means the device tried to connect at least 5 times in the last 2 minutes.

If the message doesn’t say which device it is, it could be an older device. It is trying to connect after being off the network for over 30 days. To help find the device that can't connect, you can check devices that connected in the last 30 days.

Fix: In both cases, your device is probably using the wrong password. Change the password on that device to your current network password.

Device has a poor network connection

You get this message if Nest Wifi or Google Wifi detects that a device on your network has a weak Wi-Fi signal and is having trouble staying connected. This means that the signal was weaker than -77 dBm (decibel-milliwatts) for most of the last two hours. This also means that the device got cut off from your network at least 3 times in the last 2 hours.

Fix: You might need to move your Wifi devices. Learn how to improve poor coverage.
