Create a video ad with the Ad gallery

The Ad gallery, formerly known as the display ad builder, is an ad creation tool that offers various display ad formats in different categories, including video. You can create a video ad with the Ad gallery in a Display Network campaign.

There are some changes to video ad templates in the Ad gallery.

  • As of October 2016, you’re no longer able to create TrueView video ads by using the Ad gallery in Display Network campaigns. By January, any existing TrueView video ads in Display campaigns will stop serving and the status will show as “Removed.” You can use video campaigns to continue creating and running TrueView video ads.   • We’re reducing inventory on YouTube for non-skippable in-stream ads that are bought via the Google Ads auction. By early 2017, these ads will no longer run on YouTube. They’ll continue to run on video partner sites on the Display Network, if selected in the Network settings.

You'll create an ad using the video template, and your campaign can include other ad formats, like text and image ads. This video template creates non-skippable in-stream video ads. You can use a 15-second video (some publishers allow 20 seconds) that's hosted on YouTube, or upload a video file to AdWords via the Ad gallery tool.

Here are a few important things to know when creating your campaign:

  • You can choose to bid on a CPC or viewable CPM basis for your ads.
  • These video ads will show only on the Google Display Network. (They won't appear on YouTube). You can use targeting to show your ads to certain types of people or in certain contexts.

Create a video ad with the Ad gallery

Before you can create a video ad, you must have a Display Network campaign. Once you've verified your settings, take these steps to create a video ad:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at
  2. Select the display campaign and ad group where you want to create your ad.
  3. Select the Ads tab.
  4. Click the +AD button, and select Ad gallery.
  5. Click Video ads, and then select the In-stream video ad template.
  6. Provide the required information, including a video and image.
    • Video: You can upload a video, use one of your previously uploaded videos, select a video hosted on YouTube, or make a video ad with SpotMixer.
    • Image: You can select from our stock of free images, your media library of previously uploaded content, or use an image hosted on your own site.
  7. Click Save ad.
Uploading raw video files

If you provide the raw video file, we'll transcode your video into a format that's compliant with Macromedia Flash. The formatting of your video must meet these requirements:

  • File format: AVI, ASF, Quicktime, Windows Media, MP4, or MPEG
    • Preferred video codec: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4
    • Preferred audio codec: MP3 or AAC
  • Resolution: 480 x 360 pixels
  • Frame rate: Minimum 14 FPS (30 FPS preferred)
  • Aspect ratio: 4:3 aspect ratio (recommended; other aspects will be accepted but may be letterboxed)
  • Recommended length: 15 seconds or less; many publishers will accept only up to 15 seconds.
  • File size: 75 MB or less
  • Clickthroughs: A third-party click redirect or click command is acceptable. If you include them, they must meet requirements for third-party ad serving.
