Targeting presets in proposal line items

A targeting preset is a reusable set of targeting criteria. Targeting presets save time and reduce errors by allowing you to apply the commonly used targeting consistently. Targeting presets created in your network are available to every salesperson or trafficker and are listed on the Targeting presets page under the Inventory tab. You can use targeting presets to either as a salesperson working with proposal line items or as a trafficker working line items.

This article covers how to create and use targeting presets as a salesperson working with proposal line items. If you want to learn more about how to create and use targeting presets as a trafficker working line items, see Create targeting presets.

To apply a targeting preset to a proposal line item:

  1. Navigate to proposal line item details.
    • Click the Sales tab and then My proposals or All proposals on the left navigation panel.
    • Find the desired proposal and click on its name.
    • Under the Line items tab, find the proposal line item and click its name to go into the details.
  2. Under the Customizable targeting section, start typing the name of a preset next to the Targeting preset field to find a preset.
  3. Select the preset to apply it to the proposal line item.
  4. Click Save to save the targeting applied to the proposal line item.

To create a targeting preset:

  1. Navigate to proposal line item details.
    • Click the Sales tab and then My proposals or All proposals on the left navigation panel.
    • Find the desired proposal and click on its name.
    • Under the Line items tab, find the proposal line item and click its name to go into the details.
  2. Click Save as targeting preset at the bottom of the proposal line item details page.

The targeting preset will be saved with whatever key-values you configured in the proposal line item at this time. Uncustomizable targeting derived from the product isn't saved to the targeting preset.

  3. In the box that appears, enter a name for the targeting preset and click Save.

The targeting preset is now saved under the Targeting presets page of the Inventory tab. You can edit the targeting preset from this location in future. Note that you can also create targeting presets from this location, the same way a trafficker would create a targeting preset. See Create targeting presets for details.

Changing targeting presets in the future does not affect proposal line items that have already applied a preset. Applying a preset is a one-time event, and there is no linkage between the preset and a proposal line item that has used that preset in the past.

Resolving conflicts between targeting presets and product targeting

The product upon which you based your proposal line item might restrict if or how you can customize targeting.

Products can designate some targeting uncustomizable. When you base a proposal line item on such a product, you won't be able to change the uncustomizable targeting. So, if a targeting preset contains targeting that is uncustomizable in a proposal line item, DFP ignores the uncustomizable targeting while applying targeting that is customizable.

In some cases, there may be a conflict between the targeting in a preset and the customizable targeting in a proposal line item. For example, a proposal line item might target "New York City". The selected preset may exclude "New York City". These targeting values are in direct conflict. In cases like this,  DFP prompts you to select the desired targeting.
