Stream your security camera on TV using a speaker or display

Check on what matters by streaming your compatible security or doorbell camera on your TV. Use a Google Nest or Home speaker or display, and Chromecast or a TV with Chromecast built-in.

What you need

  • Compatible security camera setup with the manufacturer’s app
  • Google Nest or Home speaker or display

Step 1. Set up your security camera

If you have a Nest camera or doorbell, find the instructions linked in the list:

If you have another compatible camera, follow the steps provided by the device maker.

Note: Nest Cam (battery) and Nest Doorbell (battery) can only stream to a smart display screen. Learn how to Stream your security camera using your display.

Step 2. Set up your device

If you haven't set up your Chromecast and speaker or display, follow the steps below. Make sure you connect these devices to the same Wi-Fi network as your camera.

Step 3. Add your camera or doorbell to the Google Home app

Note: If you’ve set up a Nest camera or doorbell, it should already be added to the Google Home app. If you can’t find it in the app, force close the app and open it again. If you still can’t find the camera, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  3. Verify that the home listed is the one you want to pair your security camera to. To switch between homes, click the triangle to the right of the home name.
  4. At the top left, tap Add  Set up device plus Works with Google.
  5. Choose your camera manufacturer from the list to finish the setup process.

Step 4. Link TVs using the Google Home app

Note: The following steps are optional if you only want to control your TV with your mobile device or tablet. However, if you want to control your TV using voice commands through your speaker or display, follow the steps below.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. At the top right, tap your account.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Go back to the home screen, then tap your Chromecast or TV with Chromecast built-in.
  6. At the top right, tap Settings  and then Recognition & sharing.
  7. Look for a banner at the top of the page that says “Enable voice control and more.”
    1. If the banner appears, tap it and follow the steps to link your TV.
    2. If the banner doesn't appear but your email address appears under “Linked account(s),” your TV is already linked.

Note: If you get an "Error when linking device" error message, you must factory reset your Chromecast device.

Step 5. Use voice commands to stream your security camera to your TV

To do this:

Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:

Start stream

"Show [camera name]"

"What’s on [camera name]?"

"[Camera name] on [Chromecast device name]"

"Play [camera name] on [Chromecast device name]"

"Show [camera name] on [Chromecast device name]"

Stop stream

"Stop [TV or Chromecast device name]"
