Cast YouTube TV using Chromecast or Google TV Streamer

Use YouTube TV with your Google streaming device to cast your favourite programmes to your TV.

Step 1. Set up your streaming device

To cast YouTube TV from your mobile device, tablet or computer to your TV, first set up Chromecast or Google TV Streamer.

Note: You can use Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra. You can cast from Chromecast (1st gen), but you may notice a degradation in performance since it no longer receives software or security updates and Google does not provide technical support for it.

If your device is on iOS 14 or later, give YouTube permission to connect to streaming devices on your local network to cast to your TV. Learn how to allow local network access below.

Step 2. Sign up for YouTube TV

If you haven't already, sign up and customise your YouTube TV membership.

Step 3. Cast programmes to your TV

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as Chromecast.
  2. Open the YouTube TV app.
  3. Tap Cast Inactive cast extension  at the top of the Home screen. 
  4. Choose the device that you want to cast to.
  5. Choose a TV show or video.
  6. Tap Play. 

Step 4. Stop casting

Tap or click Cast Inactive cast extension and then Disconnect.

Fix a problem

If you're experiencing issues with video streaming, try the first troubleshooting tip below and see if it fixes the problem. If not, move to the next step.

Close and reopen the YouTube TV app:

  1. Exit out of the YouTube TV app and then reopen it. 
  2. Try watching your video again after reopening the app.

Check for updates:

  1. Check that you've installed the latest system updates for your device.
  2. Update to the newest available version of the YouTube TV app.
  3. Uninstall and reinstall the YouTube TV app.

Check your connection:

  1. Make sure that you're connected to the Internet. YouTube TV requires a connection of at least 3 Mbps for optimal viewing experience.
  2. Turn your mobile data connection off and on.
  3. Change the video quality to a lower setting. Select More  in the video player and then Quality.
  4. Close the video player by pulling down to minimise it, and then swiping to the right Reopen the player and try watching the video again. 

Restart your streaming device:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the streaming device.
  2. Leave it unplugged for ~1 minute.
  3. Plug the power cable back in.

Restart your router:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the router.
  2. Leave it unplugged for ~1 minute.
  3. Plug the power cord back in and allow it to restart.

Restart your mobile device or browser:

  1. Hold down the power button to turn off your device, wait 30 seconds and then restart your device.
