Location requirements & permissions

When you sign up for YouTube TV, you'll need to confirm your home area. Learn more about available locations.

Note: If you try to sign up in a launched location outside of your home area, you may lose access to YouTube TV.

Understand location requirements

Why YouTube TV needs your home area

YouTube TV needs to confirm your home area for a few reasons:
  1. Content owners place restrictions on which types of content can be shown where. Certain content is only available in specific areas, per requirements from our content partners. Learn more about viewing restrictions on YouTube TV.
  2. Your home area helps us figure out which local networks to show you. Without it, we may not be able to provide you with your favorite local programming.
  3. This information helps to determine local taxes on your membership.

Enable location permissions

YouTube TV uses your internet connection to determine your location. If it can't identify where you are, you'll see an alert that YouTube TV doesn't have access to your location. You'll be asked—either by your web browser or mobile device—to allow YouTube TV to identify your location. Select Allow when prompted.

Update your current location on your TV

If you're watching YouTube TV on a TV, you can update your current location (for example, if you're traveling).
To update your location on your TV:
  1. Open the YouTube TV app on your TV.
  2. Select your profile photo.
  3. Select Settings > Area > Current Playback Area.
  4. On your mobile device, navigate to tv.youtube.com/verify.
  5. Allow the website to access your device’s location (if you haven't already) to update your current playback area.

Update your current location on a web browser

To update your location:
  1. Open YouTube TV in a web browser on your computer.
  2. Select your profile photo.
  3. Select Settings > Area > Current Playback Area.
  4. Select Update.
If we are unable to correctly identify your location, you will be asked to navigate to tv.youtube.com/verify on your mobile device. Allow the website to access your device’s location (if you haven't already) to verify the current playback area.

Troubleshoot location permissions

Still having trouble? Location permissions might be disabled on your device. You can check by following these steps.

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings.
  2. Under "Personal," tap Location > Mode.
  3. Choose High accuracy or Battery saving. Both modes use Wi-Fi and cellular networks to determine location.
Notes:
  • Once you've signed up for YouTube TV, you can use it while traveling.
  • If you're a frequent traveler, make sure to use YouTube TV at least once every three months in your home area. This ensures YouTube TV can continue to offer you the correct local networks.
