Troubleshoot disapproved ads

We’ve changed the way we’re communicating policy violations in our UI and API. As part of this change, the names and descriptions of the disapproved reasons listed in the Authorized Buyers user interface have been updated.

During this transition period, these updated disapproved ad reasons may appear to some users, while others will continue to see the original versions of the disapproved ad reasons.

You can submit ads to Authorized Buyers through a request to the Real-time Bidding API or within the real-time bidding interface. All ads must be reviewed and approved by Google.

Check creative approval status with these Authorized Buyers resources

You have the ability to check for approval status (including disapproval reasons by creative ID) using various creative resources. If you require access to these resources, contact your Authorized Buyers support team.

  • Creatives: This Authorized Buyers tool allows you to view the approval status of your creatives and get detailed information on why a creative was disapproved.
  • Real-time Bidding API: This Authorized Buyers Real-time Bidding API provides the most updated approval status of your creatives and detailed information on why a creative was disapproved.
  • Understanding the creativeServingDecision: When a creative is reviewed, its creativeServingDecision is populated with detected attributes and policy compliance fields that determine the kind of inventory that it is eligible for.
Creative troubleshooting resources
  • Video Suite Inspector: This Google tool allows you to preview your video creatives by providing VAST URLs or XML which you can use to debug video functionality.
  • Chrome Developer Tools: This tool allows you to debug your ad tags. Especially useful for monitoring calls made from your ad tags and for inspecting the use of cookies or local storage are the Network and Resources panels.
  • RTB Breakout: This Authorized Buyers tool allows you to view the filtering status of your creatives including detailed information on why a creative was filtered.

   * Creatives may be held for additional review and appear as "conditionally approved".
** If you re-submit a currently approved creative via the Real-time Bidding API, it will stop serving until re-approved.
*** Creatives can be found if they have been active (submitted or bid with) within the past 15 days.
Re-submit your creatives

Use the following methods to have disapproved ads reviewed for auction eligibility:

  • Real-time Bidding API: Submit a creative re-review request by using Real-time Bidding API.
  • Manual request: If you are unable to re-submit creatives via the Real-time Bidding API or a bid response, contact your Authorized Buyers support team to manually request a creative re-review.
Creatives running on Open Auction inventory and in a Preferred Deal have two separate statuses available in Authorized Buyers tools and the Real-time Bidding API. Your creative may be disapproved for Open Auction serving, but approved or conditionally approved for serving in a Preferred Deal.

   * Creatives may be held for additional review and appear as "conditionally approved".
** If you re-submit a currently approved creative via the Real-time Bidding API, it will stop serving until re-approved.
*** Creatives can be found if they have been active (submitted or bid with) within the past 15 days.

Disapproved ads will not serve on the Authorized Buyers, though many times the issue can be easily addressed. Some of the most common reasons are shown here, with corresponding troubleshooting steps and additional information.

Disapproved ad reasons

Google disapproves ads that either do not comply with content and creative policies or the requirements for third-party ad serving. These are the most common reasons an ad may be disapproved by Google.

Ad is serving Flash content

The ad is disapproved because it contains Flash content.

Learn more about what you can do

If you are seeing this rejection, it means your ad contains Flash assets or loads Flash pixels. It may not always be immediately apparent where Flash calls are coming from. For example, many third/fourth parties use Flash elements for things like viewability measurement. Learn how to find Flash content using Chrome Developer Tools.

If your ad is rejected because it includes Flash content, remove the Flash content and replace it with an HTML5 version. If you're new to HTML5, check out these tools to make the transition to HTML5:

Learn more about what you can do

All ads on Authorized Buyers must be designed to only redirect the user to a landing page upon user-initiated click. Ads that inflate clicks by automatically redirect the user to a landing page, file download, or application are prohibited.

Common issues include landing pages that disable browser navigational functions, sites with pop-ups or interstitial ads that interfere with the user's ability to see the content requested, or ads that look like software download buttons, official system warnings, or webpage features like menus, search results, or other site content. Your site should not present unexpected webpages, ads, or sponsored offers to users when they are navigating the site.

Destination not crawlable

The ad is disapproved because the declared click-through URL leads to a landing page that could not be crawled. Common crawl errors include robots.txt failures, DNS errors, server errors, or URL unreachable errors.

Learn more about what you can do

The landing page of all ads on Authorized Buyers must be crawlable. Authorized Buyers uses Google crawlers to read and ensure that all landing pages comply with Authorized Buyers policies.

If your ad is disapproved because the landing page is not crawlable, correct by ensuring Google bots can crawl your site, and resubmit your ad.

Here's what you can do to make sure your creative's landing page is crawlable:

  1. Allow the Google crawler on your page. You can add User-agent: AdsBot-Google to your domain’s robots.txt. You can also use Google Search Console to see how to make your pages accessible to Google.
  2. Make sure that you declare the correct landing page:
    1. Declared click through URL needs to be the same as the landing page creative clicks through. You can find declared URLs for a creative by going to Troubleshooting > Creatives > [Creative] > Click through URLs.
    2. You declare a landing page during REST API upload or in the bid response field "click_through_url" (for RTB Proto) or "adomain" (for OpenRTB Proto).
    3. This declared URL can be the main domain of the landing page or full landing page. If you only use the main domain of the landing page, make sure that it is crawlable.
    4. Make sure that you do not declare intermediate calls to the ad server as click-through URLs. Click trackers are not crawlable and will cause the "DESTINATION_NOT_CRAWLABLE" rejection.

  • Make sure the creative does not download .js files to the user's browser

Check all landing pages for creatives:

  • Remove all references of the suspicious domain from the landing page. If the suspicious domain is the landing page destination, you must continuously remove all the served creatives that load this domain.
  • Check the status of your site in Google Search Console. If you haven’t used Search Console before, enter the URL of your website and click "Add a property" to see its status. You may need to verify that you own the site.
  • If Search Console doesn’t report any problems, your site could still have security issues that were detected by the system. Consult with your webmaster or web hosting provider. Learn more about how we identify malicious or unwanted software.
  • Remove any malicious or unwanted software. Google provides resources and instructions to help you fix your site through Help for Hacked Websites.
