Troubleshoot disapproved ads

We’ve changed the way we’re communicating policy violations in our UI and API. As part of this change, the names and descriptions of the disapproved reasons listed in the Authorized Buyers user interface have been updated.
 
During this transition period, these updated disapproved ad reasons may appear to some users, while others will continue to see the original versions of the disapproved ad reasons.

You can submit ads to Authorized Buyers through a request to the Real-time Bidding API or within the real-time bidding interface. All ads must be reviewed and approved by Google.

 

Disapproved ads will not serve on the Authorized Buyers, though many times the issue can be easily addressed. Some of the most common reasons are shown here, with corresponding troubleshooting steps and additional information.

Disapproved ad reasons

Google disapproves ads that either do not comply with content and creative policies or the requirements for third-party ad serving. These are the most common reasons an ad may be disapproved by Google.

Ad is serving Flash content

The ad is disapproved because it contains Flash content.

Adult content

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains adult-oriented content. Ensure that your ads and landing pages only show "family safe" content.

Automated Ad Clicking

The ad is disapproved because it automatically redirects the user to a landing page without a click or reports a click when one was not made. This includes ads that self-direct your creatives to landing pages or use any landing pages that contain automatic ad clicking.

Birth control

The ad is disapproved because Google doesn't allow ads related to birth control or fertility products in some countries.

Circumventing systems

The ad is disapproved because it attempts to circumvent or interfere with Google's advertising systems and processes.

Destination experience

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page is difficult to interact with.

Destination not crawlable

The ad is disapproved because the declared click-through URL leads to a landing page that could not be crawled. Common crawl errors include robots.txt failures, DNS errors, server errors, or URL unreachable errors.

Destination not working

The ad is disapproved because the click-through URL does not work properly. Common issues include malformed click-through URLs, invalid click redirect URLs, problems with macro replacement in URLs, or non-working/non-existent landing pages.

Download size exceeded

The ad is disapproved because the download size exceeds the 5MB limit.

Enabling dishonest behavior

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains content that enables dishonest behavior.

Gambling and games

The ad is disapproved because it contains gambling and games content, which may be prohibited in certain instances or locations.

Guns

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page promotes guns, gun parts, or gun-related content.

Inappropriate content

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains offensive or inappropriate content which may include violence and self-harm, harassment, racism, hatred and intolerance, and capitalizing on sensitive events or threatened species.

Invalid fourth party call

The ad is disapproved because of a detected fourth-party call to an unapproved technology vendor.

Invalid url protocol

The ad is disapproved because the landing page does not work properly. Common issues include malformed click-through URLs, invalid click redirect URLs, problems with macro replacement in URLs, invalid URL that was called from landing pages, or non-working/non-existent landing pages.

Invalid vendor

The ad is disapproved because of a detected fourth-party call to an unapproved vendor.

 

Malicious or unwanted software

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains malicious software or "malware" that may harm or gain unauthorized access to a computer, device, or network.

Media not fully functional

The ad is disapproved because the creative is not functional or contains broken assets.

Misleading content

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains inaccurate or misleading content.

Misusing personal information

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that misuses personal information.

Non-SSL compliant

The ad is disapproved because it has been detected as containing non-secure HTTP calls.

Online pharmacy certification required

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page contains content that requires an online pharmacy certification.

Other weapons

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page promotes other weapons.

Personal loans

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page promotes personal loans without meeting the policy requirements.

Recreational drugs

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page promotes recreational drugs or drug-related content.

Shocking content

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains shocking content such as profane language, gruesome or disgusting imagery, or promotions that are designed to shock or scare.

Style and spelling

The ad is disapproved because it does not meet high professional and editorial standards.

Third-party policy requirements

The ad is disapproved because it contains or leads to a landing page that contains content ineligible or unapproved for serving due to Google's third-party policy requirements.

Tobacco

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page promotes tobacco, tobacco equipment, or tobacco-related content.

Too many cookies

The ad is disapproved because the number of cookies being set exceeded 25.

Too many HTTP calls made by the creative

The ad is disapproved because the number of HTTP/HTTPS (fourth-party) calls exceeded 100.

Unapproved substances

The ad is disapproved because the ad or landing page contains content related to unapproved substances.

The ad is disapproved because it sets an unauthorized cookie on a Google domain such as googlesyndication.com or doubleclick.net.

Unclear relevance

The ad is disapproved because it is unclear, confusing, doesn't lead users to relevant content, or doesn't accurately reflect the business, product, or service that is promoted on the landing page.

Unsupported language

The ad or destination content is in an unsupported language.

Use of raw IP

The ad is disapproved because it makes a call to a numeric IP address.

Video ad requirements

The ad is disapproved because it did not meet the video ad requirements.

Video VAST is malformed

The ad is disapproved because a VAST creative is not as expected.

Once you correct any issues with a disapproved ad and resubmit, the ad will be re-reviewed by Google. Most ads are reviewed within a single business day, though some can take longer if a more complex review is needed.
