Add, remove, or change a credit card

  • You can change or remove the credit card you're using in your AdWords Express account, as long as you have another payment method in your account.
  • The steps to update your credit card are a little different depending on whether you're using automatic payments (pay after your ads run) or manual payments (pay before your ads run).

Automatic payments

To use a credit card with the automatic payment setting, just add it to your AdWords Express account and make it your primary payment method. Click one of the links below to see instructions to use a credit card with the automatic payment setting.

Add a new credit card to your account
  1. Sign in to your AdWords Express account at https://adwords.google.com/express/
  2. At the top right corner, click the gear icon and select Billing from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Billing settings.
  4. Under "Available payment methods", click Add new payment method.
  5. Fill out your credit card information, then click Save.

Edit information for an existing credit card in your account

Editing your credit card information may include updating the expiration date.

  1. Sign in to your AdWords Express account at https://adwords.google.com/express/
  2. At the top right corner, click the gear icon and select Billing from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Billing settings.
  4. Locate the credit card you'd like to update and click Edit.
  5. Change your credit card info as needed.
  6. Click Save.

Make a payment with a credit card that exists in your account
  1. Sign in to your AdWords Express account at https://adwords.google.com/express/
  2. At the top right corner, click the gear icon and select Billing from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Transaction history.
  4. Select the existing payment method.
  5. Enter your payment amount, then click Review payment to review and confirm your payment.

  1. Sign in to your AdWords Express account at https://adwords.google.com/express/
  2. At the top right corner, click the gear icon and select Billing from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Transaction history.
  4. Click Or add a new payment method, then enter your credit card information.
  5. Enter your payment amount, then click Review payment to review and confirm your payment.

Credit card payment authorization

When you make a payment, we’ll first authorize your card for the amount of the charge. This means that our system checks with your credit card provider to make sure that your card has enough credit available to cover your payment. Once this is done, your balance will update and your ads will typically start running again if they had stopped.

It might take up to 24 hours before a payment processes fully.

How charges appear on your credit card statement

A payment authorization might show up on your credit card statement, but it's not an actual charge. It’ll be automatically removed. The way that AdWords Express charges appear on your credit card or bank statement can vary depending on the credit card you're using. Typically, here's what you can expect to see if you're using the following payment methods:

  • Visa or MasterCard
    If you're using Visa or MasterCard and you’ve been charged by AdWords Express, you might see any of the following on your statement:
    • GOOGLE ADWORDS. CC@GOOGLE.COM
    • GOOGLE*GOOG[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • GOOGLE*SVCS[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • GOOGLE*ADWS[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
  • American Express
    • GOOGLE LTD. CC@GOOGLE.COM ADWORDS ADVERTISING
    • GOOGLE INC. CC@GOOGLE.COM ADWORDS ADVERTISING
    • GOOGLE*SVCS[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • GOOGLE*ADWS[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
  • Bank account (direct debit)
    If you're using direct debit and you’ve been charged by AdWords Express, you might see any of the following on your statement:
    • Goog_[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • Google_[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • Google[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • GOOGLE[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]
    • GOOOGLE_A[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]

    • ADW[10-digit AdWords Customer ID]

Multiple customer IDs

If you notice more than one customer ID on your statement, it might mean that you have more than one AdWords or AdWords Express account associated with that payment method.

Change or remove your credit card

If you're on automatic payments and unsuccessfully tried to remove or change your credit card, it’s probably because it was the primary payment method for your account. Your account needs to have a primary payment method to ensure that there’s a way for AdWords Express to automatically pay for your ads.

You can change or remove the credit card you're using as long as you have a backup payment method. Click the link below for instructions to update the credit card in your account.

How to change your primary credit card
  1. Sign in to your AdWords Express account at https://adwords.google.com/express/
  2. At the top right corner, click the gear icon and select Billing from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click Billing settings.
  4. Click Add new payment method.
  5. Select the payment method that you'd like to add and enter your information.
  6. Click Save.
  7. On the Billing settings page, locate the payment method that you'd like to remove and click Remove.
