Update your payment method

A payment method is what you use to pay for AdWords Express. For example, you might be paying with a credit card or bank account. If you ever want to  update or remove your payment method, go to your billing page and click Billing settings to make changes.

Edit payment method information

Computer
  1. Sign into your AdWords Express account.
  2. Click the Menu button menu at the top.
  3. Make sure the business you're looking for appears at the top of the "My business" drop-down menu. If not, click the name of the business, and then click the Menu button menu again at the top.
  4. Click Billing.
  5. Click the Billing settings tab.
  6. Under "Available payment methods," click Edit.
  7. Edit as needed.
  8. Click Save.

  1. Open the AdWords Express app for Android.
  2. Tap the Menu button menu at the top.
  3. Make sure the business you're looking for appears at the top of the "My business" drop-down menu. If not, tap the name of the business, and then tap the Menu button menu again at the top.

  6. Under "Available payment methods," tap Edit.

iOS

Remove a payment method

Computer
  1. Sign into your AdWords Express account.

  3. Make sure the business you're looking for appears at the top of the "My business" drop-down menu. If not, click the name of the business, and then click the Menu button menu again at the top.
  4. Click Billing.
  5. Click the Billing settings tab.
  6. Under "Available payment methods," find the payment method and click Remove.

Note

Your account will always need at least 1 payment method on file. If you use automatic payments, you'll always need a primary payment method associated with your account. If you want to remove a payment method, first add a new one and assign it as primary. You can then remove the former primary payment method.

Android

  3. Tap the My business drop-down menu, and then tap the name of the business.
  4. Tap Billing.
  5. Tap the Settings tab.

  6. Under "Available payment methods," find the payment method and tap Remove. If you have only one payment method listed, there won't be a "Remove" link. Instead, you can edit that payment method.

Note

Your account will always need at least 1 payment method on file. If you use automatic payments, you'll always need a primary payment method associated with your account. If you want to remove a payment method, first add a new one and assign it as primary. You can then remove the former primary payment method.

More details about updating your payment method

  • If you update your AdWords Express payment method, but you also have AdWords ads with the same account, you'll update the payment method for both AdWords and AdWords Express.
  • If you use automatic payments, you'll always need to have a primary payment method associated with your account. If you ever want to remove this, add a new payment method and assign it as a primary—you can then remove your old primary payment method.
  • If your credit card has expired and you receive a new credit card with the same account number and an updated expiration date, you'll want to edit your card details—not add a new one.
  • If the number of your credit card or bank account has changed, we consider this to be a new credit card or bank account. You'll need to add it as a new payment method. Then, remove your outdated payment method.
  • You don't need to re-enter your CVV number if your credit card number stays the same or your CVV number changes.

Assign a payment method as a primary or backup

If you use automatic payments, you'll need to have one payment method that's designated as a primary. You can also add a backup credit card to your account. In case there's ever a problem with your primary payment method, your backup credit card will keep your ads running.

You can use only credit or debit cards as a backup payment method—not a bank account.

Re-enable a payment method or resolve a declined credit card

If your payment method is ever declined, it'll be disabled in your AdWords Express account. If you'd like to re-enable that payment method again, click the link below to see steps.

Re-enable a payment method

Computer
  1. Sign into your AdWords Express account.
  2. Click the Menu button menu at the top.
  3. Click Billing.
  4. On the "Transaction history" tab, click Payments in the "All transactions" drop-down menu above the transactions table.
  5. Click the linked payment receipt you want to view.
  6. Click Print.

  6. Find the payment method with the "Re-enable payment method" link. Make sure all the details are correct for this payment method. If needed, call your bank or credit institution to make sure you can use the payment method in your AdWords Express account.

Note

If you see a message, "This payment method can't be used. Fix it," then click Fix it.
