Target video line items to positions

Only available in Google Ad Manager 360.

You can target video line items to specific video positions, and specific positions within pods. If you don't target to a specific position, the line item is eligible to serve in any position that your ad rules specify. If you don't have ad rules enabled for your network, your video line items can serve to any eligible inventory, based on your targeting.

For video position targeting to work properly, you should create ad rules that include positions.

Target pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll positions

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Either create a video line item, or click Delivery and select an existing video line item to edit.

  3. With the line item open, click Settings.
  4. Click Video position from the "Add targeting" section, and click include next to the positions to target. You can also click any position to target specific positions within the pod.
  5. Click Save.
  • Any previously saved video position targeting is cleared whenever the line item type is changed.
  • Video position targeting does not apply for Ad Exchange line items within optimized pods. Configuring ad break templates to restrict backfill to specific spots/positions is the best way to achieve a similar outcome within optimized pods.

Available video positions

  • Pre-roll: The ad position before video content begins.
  • Mid-roll: The ad positions during video content. You can target "Any mid-roll" for any mid-roll pods, Mid-roll X, where "X" is a specific mid-roll pod, or Last mid-roll (Beta)  for the pod that becomes the last mid-roll.*

    Ad rules can define whether ads show at particular times (such as after 30 seconds) or at cue points in the content. Cue points are defined in your content management system and are included in the metadata that Ad Manager gathers when it syncs with the content source.

    Content ingestion requirements for mid-rolls
    To target mid-roll positions, ensure successful content ingestion of the following:

    • Duration
    • Cue points (if you create ad rules that display mid-rolls "Every N cue points" or "At fixed cue points")

    Click Video and then Content, and select the video to confirm successful duration and cue point ingestion.

  • Post-roll: The ad position after video content ends.

* The "Last mid-roll" position is a beta feature and is not yet supported in forecasting.

Positions within a pod

When you target a pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll position you can also target the position within the pod.

Pod positions that appear in the targeting picker are set up as maximums for your Ad Manager network. To set the maximum for your network, click Admin and then Video and audio and then Video and audio settings.

Target bumper positions

What is a bumper ad?

Video bumper ads are short video ads that can play before or after a video ad or ad pod. They are often used to indicate that ads are either about to display, or to promote the next ad. Companion ads do not appear with bumper ads.

While the creative of any video ad can be skippable, use caution for video ads with shorter durations. For example, you may want to deactivate Skippable video for a 7-second creative serving to a bumper position.

  1. Sign in to Google Ad Manager.
  2. Either create a video line item, or click Delivery and select an existing video line item to edit.

  3. With the line item open, click Settings and select Bumper as the line item type.
  4. Enter the impression goal as a percentage of remaining impressions, which refers to the percentage of unreserved impressions available for this inventory. This is the only available impression goal setting, as bumpers do not support quantitative goals.
  5. Click Video position from the "Add targeting" section, and click include next to the positions to target. 
  6. Click Save.

Creative-level targeting is not supported for bumper line items.

Available bumper positions

Bumpers can appear before and after pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll ad slots. They are often used to indicate that ads are either about to display, or to promote the next ad.

By default, all bumpers are targeted if you don't explicitly include specific bumper positions.
