Now that you’ve switched from Slack® to G Suite, here are some tips on using Google Chat to collaborate with your team, whether in a 1:1 direct message (DM) or a dedicated group workspace.

Send a DM to someone
Send a DM to someone or a group
  1. Open Chat.
  2. At the top left, click Find people, rooms, bots.
  3. Enter someone's name or email address, or select them from the suggestions. Suggestions include everyone in your organization, even if they don't have Google Chat turned on. To send a direct message to someone outside your organization, enter the full email address. 
    To send a direct message to 2 or more people within your organization, click Group Message.
  4. Click Message.
  5. Enter your message and press Enter. Your message can include any text, including a link (URL).

Join a channel
Preview and join a room
  1. Open Chat.
  2. At the top left, click Find people, rooms, bots.
  3. Click Browse rooms. The rooms you're invited to appear at the top of the list.
  4. Choose to join or preview a room:
    • To join a room, click Add .
    • To preview a room, point to the room name and click Preview. When you preview a room, you can read messages, but you can't participate in the discussion and won't receive notifications. To join the room, click Join in the preview.
  5. If you join a room, click Open to start a new conversation.

Create a channel
Create a room

You can chat with both people within your organization and with external guests.

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Next to Rooms, click Create.
  3. (Optional) To add a room avatar, click Choose an emojiand thenselect an emoji. If you don't select an emoji, a default avatar is used instead.
  4. Enter a room name.
  5. Enter the names or email addresses of the people and groups that you want to add or select from the suggestions. Suggestions include everyone in your organization, even if they don't have Chat.
  6. (Optional) To allow people from outside your organization to join the room, check the Allow people outside your organization to join box.

    Important: You won't be able to change this setting later.

  7. (Optional) To notify invitees, check the Notify people via email box.
  8. Click Create.
  9. (Optional) To add more people and bots to the room, click Add people & bots, enter the name, and then click Send.
     
 
Edit a message
Edit text in a conversation
Point to your chat message, then click one of the following:
  • Edit ""—Make your changes, then click Update.
  • Delete Trash—To confirm, click Delete.
Add styles and emoji to your message
Add styles and emoji to your text

You can add formatting to your chat messages by including special characters in the text.

  • To bold text, add asterisks * before and after the text you want bolded.
    For example, if you type *Tuesday*, the chat will display Tuesday.
  • To italicize text, add underscores _ before and after the text you want italicized.
    For example, if you type _every week_ , the chat will display every week.
  • To strike through text, add tildes ~ before and after the text you want struck through.
  • To create an inline code block, add backticks ` before and after the text you want in a code block.
  • To create a multiline code block, add three backticks ``` before and after the text you want in a code block.

You can also click Emoji and select the emoji you want to add.

  1. Open Chat.
  2. Next to a room name, click More""and then Leave.
  3. Click Leave room.
Delete messages
Delete an entire DM
  1. Select the direct message in one of these ways:
    • On the left, next to the person's name, click More ""and then Delete conversation.
    • Select the person, and then at the top, click Down arrow ""and then Delete conversation.
  2. At the confirmation message, tap Delete.
Upload and share files
Upload and share files
  1. In Google Chat, go to the message or conversation and choose an option:
    • To attach a file from your computer, click Upload Upload.
      The file is not added to Drive. Other users get the file directly in the message.
    • To attach a Drive file, click Google Drive "".
      When you send the file, you'll be warned if the room or someone in a direct message doesn't have access. If you can edit the file, you'll see an option to grant View, Comment, or Edit access to everyone in the chat. If you grant access to everyone in a room, it also applies to people who join the room later.
  2. Select the file you want to send.
  3. Click Send "".

  1. Sign in to Chat.
  2. At the top, click Search .
  3. On the left, select a room or click All rooms and direct messages.
  4. In the search box, enter search text.
  5. (Optional) To narrow your search, click people and content types (such as images or videos). 
  6. Click Go to thread to open the result.

Manage your notifications
  1. Open Chat.
  2. At the top right, click Settings and thenSettings.
  3. Under Desktop, Mobile, and Email, click the Down arrow "" and select what you want notifications for:
    • All Messages—Get a notification for all direct messages and all messages in rooms.
    • New threads, threads I’m following and direct messages—Get a notification for all direct messages, the first message of every new thread, and all threads you’re following.
    • Threads I’m following and direct messages—Get a notification for all direct messages and threads you’re following.
    • Only @mentions and direct messages—Get a notification for direct messages and @mentions in Rooms.
    • Off—Turn off all notifications.
  4. (Optional) To hear a sound, check Play sounds for incoming push notifications and popups.
  5. (Optional) If you use Chat in Gmail, check Show push notifications for Chat messages in Gmail.
  6. Under Mobile, click the Down arrow "" and select what you want notifications for.
