Reset a user's password

If a user forgets the password for their managed Google account (for example, their G Suite or Cloud Identity account), or if you think their account has been compromised, you can reset their password from the Google Admin console.

These steps don't apply if your account uses Single-Sign-On (SSO) with a third-party identity provider. Learn more

Reset a user's password

As an administrator, you can reset users' passwords to maintain account security.

To reset a user's password:

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console dashboard, go to Users.
  3. In the Users list, find the user. If you need help, see Find a user account.
  4. Hover over the user you want to reset the password for and click Reset password Reset Password icon at the right.

    You can also find this option at the top-left of the user's account page.

    Note: To see either of these options, you must be signed in with an administrator account that has reset password privileges.

  5. Click Password and then Reset Password.
  6. Choose to automatically generate the password or enter a password.

    By default, password minimum length is 8 characters. You can change password requirements for your organization.

  7. (Optional) To view the password, click Preview Preview .
  8. (Optional) Ask the user to change the new password the next time they sign in.
  9. Click Reset.
  10. (Optional) To paste the password somewhere, such as in a Hangouts Chat conversation with the user, click Click to copy password.
  11. (Optional) Allow the user to recover their own password.
  12. Choose to email the password to the user, or click Done.
Reset an administrator's password

To reset the password of another administrator, you must have Super Admin privileges. If you have Super Admin privileges, follow the same steps as above for resetting a user's password.

After changing a password

Users with 2-step verification

After you reset their password, users with 2-step verification might need to generate new application-specific passwords for any third-party applications connected to the account, such as mail clients.

Users with OAuth 2.0 tokens

Users who use an OAuth 2.0 token to access certain products need to request a new token after their password is reset. Tell users to sign in with the new password to generate another OAuth 2.0 token.
