Content settings

Parents can choose how content will be selected in the app. To use these content settings, you’ll need to set up a profile for your child.
To change content settings:
  1. Tap the Lock icon in the bottom corner of any page in the app.
  2. Complete the multiplication problem or read and enter the numbers that appear. Or, enter your custom passcode.
  3. Select Settings Settings icon .
  4. Select your child’s profile and enter your parent account password.
  5. Select Preschool, Younger, Older, or Approve content yourself.

Preschool Content Setting

The Preschool content setting (ages 4 & under) allows kids to watch videos that promote creativity, playfulness, learning, and exploration. Our systems work hard to exclude content not suitable for kids in preschool, but not all videos have been manually reviewed. If you find something inappropriate that we missed, you can block it or report it for fast review.  Search in this setting is limited to the YouTube Kids videos included in the Preschool content setting.

Younger Content Setting

The Younger content setting was designed with kids ages 5—7 in mind. This content includes songs, cartoons, crafts and other content that generally appeals to kids in preschool and early elementary school. Our systems try to exclude content not suitable for young kids. But because we can’t manually review all content, and no automated system is perfect, we may miss some videos. If you find a video that isn’t appropriate for kids, report it for fast review. Search in this setting is limited to the YouTube Kids videos included in the Preschool & Younger content settings.

Older Content Setting

The Older content setting was designed with kids 8—12 in mind, and includes music videos, gaming, science and more. This setting is for older kids who may be ready for more grown-up content filtered from the broader universe of videos on YouTube. For example, the app will show music and gaming videos and vlogs that are not eligible to be shown in YouTube Kids with the Younger content setting and may include more explicit language and imagery, some violence, or suggestive content. This setting tries to exclude mature content. But since we can’t manually review all content, and no automated system is perfect, we may miss some videos. This means that in this setting, there is a chance that your child may run into more mature videos that could include nudity, offensive language and violence. If you find a video that isn’t appropriate for kids using this Older content setting, report it for fast review. Search in this setting allows your child to explore all YouTube Kids videos, including preschool, younger, and older content.
Note: You can see a preview of content that is available in Preschool, Younger, or Older content settings when you click on their card. You can change these settings at any time.
Approved content only

In this setting, your child will only be able to watch videos, channels, and collections that you’ve handpicked. Collections are videos and channels grouped by topics, such as science and music, picked by the YouTube Kids teams or by our partners.

This setting is available in all countries/regions where YouTube Kids is available.

Turning search off

You can restrict your child’s experience to a more limited set of videos by turning the Search feature off.

With the Search feature turned off, your child can’t search for videos. Your child will also be limited to videos and channels that have been verified by YouTube Kids.

With the Search feature turned on, your child can search for new videos that interest them from the millions available in the YouTube Kids app.

Note: Please keep in mind that there's always a chance your child may find something you don't want them to watch. You can report this content for our quick review.

To turn off the Search feature, toggle Allow searching to Off in Settings .

If you turn the Search off, the watch and search history in your app will be cleared. This will reset Recommended videos and Watch it again. Learn more about Search in YouTube Kids.

YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium Membership

Check the details of the YouTube Premium membership linked to the YouTube Kids app on this device. You can also remove YouTube Premium from the kids app from this page by tapping the Remove from app button. This will also remove all downloaded YouTube videos on your device.

Note: Removing your YouTube Premium account from the kids app will not remove the account from the device (you may be signed into other Google apps on this device).

Background & offline

Tap Background play to set up the YouTube Kids app to play videos while using other apps or when your screen is off.

Turn on downloads to save a list of up to 24 videos per profile. You can watch downloaded videos when you aren’t connected to the internet. Downloaded videos are selected by the app from recommended videos (based on your use history) or, if we don’t have enough info, by what’s popular on YouTube Kids. Downloaded videos are updated automatically every 24 hrs. The Save over WI-FI only setting lets you conserve mobile data by preventing the app from downloading new videos offline while you’re connected to mobile data.

Change the storage limit and set the quality used for downloads. In general, lower quality videos take up less space on your device but may not play back as clearly.
