Your mobile phone carrier may have charged you for making an international call for two reasons:

  • You may be calling international numbers directly through your mobile carrier
  • You’re being charged for making an international call that goes through a U.S. access number while traveling in another country.

You can use the steps below to check that you have the correct settings for making international calls on your mobile phone.

How to make international calls

When you use Google Voice on your mobile phone, international calls use the standard minutes from your cell phone plan and are placed through direct access numbers. You may also be charged additional roaming fees by your carrier. You can pay for the international calls with your Google Voice credit, at Google Voice international rates.

For every international call, you’ll hear a message that says how much the call costs and that the call is being routed through Google Voice.

If you don't hear the message, your call isn't being routed through Google Voice, and you may be charged by your mobile carrier. You may need to check your settings because your settings could have changed from a recent app update or another app could be conflicting with Google Voice. Follow the instructions listed below to choose Google Voice for international calls.

Use Google Voice for all international calls on Android phones

You can set your Android phone to use the Google Voice app for all international calls.

  1. Open the Google Voice app on your Android phone.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Making calls.
  4. Touch Only use Google Voice for international calls or Use Google Voice to make all calls. You can also choose to be asked every time you make a call on your Android phone whether you want to use Google Voice or your mobile carrier.
  5. Dial the country code and then the international phone number. For instance, the country code for the United Kingdom is 44, so you’d enter 44 and then the phone number. Remember, you’ll hear a prompt that says you’re calling using Google Voice and how much the call costs. If you don’t hear the message, you won’t be using Google Voice and may get charged by your mobile carrier.

Use Google Voice for international calls on iPhones

For iPhones, every time you want to make an international call through Google Voice, you need to place the call through the Voice app each time.

  1. Open the Google Voice app on your iPhone.
  2. Touch Dialer.
  3. Enter the country code and then the international phone number. For instance, the country code for the United Kingdom is 44, so enter 44 and then the phone number. Remember, you’ll hear a message that says you’re calling using Google Voice and how much the call costs. If you don’t hear the message, you won’t be using Google Voice and may get charged by your mobile carrier.
