Retaining items added to Drive from Gmail

When an item attached to a Gmail message is added to Drive using the Add to Drive feature, a copy of that item is created in Drive. The Gmail message and attachment are subject to Gmail retention policies, but the copied item in Drive isn’t subject to Drive retention policies, even if that item is later edited.

If you need to ensure that the item is retained for a certain period, you can create a retention rule for Gmail that uses the search operator has:attachment. However, you can’t create a rule that can retain the item in Drive.
