Filter data sources in charts

Executive Reports

Initially, charts display metrics from all data sources that are in a report. For example, if you add the clicks metric to a chart, the chart displays the number of clicks from all advertisers and engine accounts that you’ve specified as data sources for the report.

If you want a chart to display metrics only from specific campaigns, devices, or even keywords of a particular match type, add a filter to the chart. The chart will contain data only for items that match the filter.

Business data can't be used to filter reports.

Examples

Campaigns across advertisers and engine accounts
  • You’ve organized your search marketing into three different advertisers to match your business units.

  • You want a chart that compares revenue and cost for all campaigns in the US and Canada, across all three advertisers and all engine accounts.

  • All of the US campaigns have names that start with US_, and all of the Canadian campaigns have names that start with CA_.

Here’s how to set up the chart and filter:

  1. Create a report that includes all three advertisers.

  2. Create a chart and specify the Cost and Revenue metrics.

  3. Click in the Filter field and specify a condition for the filter to match:

    1. Select Campaign name from the list.
      A second list appears.

    2. In the second list, select starts with.
      A text box appears.

    3. Enter US_ in the text box.

  4. To create an additional condition, click +OR and make the following selections:
    Campaign name, starts with, CA_

    A filter with OR conditions.

OR makes the filter more inclusive, while AND makes the filter more restrictive.
  5. Click Apply.

The chart will include data for all campaigns with names that start with US_ or CA_.

Use AND for more restrictive criteria

Continuing from the example above, you want another chart to display metrics:

  • From all three advertisers.

  • In both the US and Canada.

  • But only for keywords to which you’ve applied a label named Brand.

Filter with OR and AND conditions.

Here’s how to set up the chart and filter:

  1. Follow the steps from the example above, but don’t click Apply yet.

  2. Click the +AND button and make the following selections:
Label name, contains all of, Brand

  3. Click Apply.

The chart will include data from all campaigns with names that start with US_ or CA_ and that has been labeled with Brand.

Use some labels to filter and others to segment
  • You’ve applied the flipflops label to keywords for advertising flipflops and the sandals label for keywords that advertise sandals.

  • You’ve also applied the color red, color blue, and color green labels to indicate the color of the flipflops and sandals.

  • All of your campaigns in the US have names that start with US_.

  • You want to create a chart that displays clicks only for ads about flipflops and sandals in the US, and broken out by color.

Here’s how to set up the chart and filter:

  1. Create a report that includes all three advertisers.

  2. Create a chart and specify the Clicks metric.

  3. In the Filter field, make the following selections:

    1. Label, contains all of

    2. From the label list, select flipflops and sandals.

  4. Click +AND and specify the following:
    Campaign name, starts with, US_

    Filter with a label condition.

  5. Click Apply.

  6. Click + Add Segment and do the following:

    1. Select Label.

    2. Click the Select button, select the color red, color blue, and color green labels, and then click Apply.

      Segment a filtered report.

The chart will display clicks only for ads about flipflops and sandals in the US, and broken out by color.

Use a metric filter with other types of filters

The US flipflops and sandals table chart includes ads that received less than five clicks; data that you want to eliminate from the table because you want to focus on your best performing ads.

  • You want to display only high-click flipflop and sandals ads and CPCs.
  • Filter the chart to see ads with more than five clicks.

Here's how to set up the chart and edit the filter to see the data.

  1. In the upper right corner of the chart, click Edit▼, and then click Edit chart.
  2. In the Metric section, click +Add metric.
  3. In the Search by name box, type CPC, and then select it from the list.

The preview of the table updates to display a CPC column.

  4. Display only the first 100 rows in the table, sorted from the lowest to highest CPC:
    1. Under the Segment section, select the Sort and limit rows checkbox.
    2. Next to Sort by, click the arrows and then click CPC.
    3. Next to Order, click the arrows and then click Ascending.
    4. Next to Row Limit, click the arrows and then click 100.
  5. Filter out ads with fewer than five clicks:
    1. In the Filter section, click Edit filters.
    2. Under AND the following criteria, click Select a metric▼.

Create a filter

  1. Start creating a chart or editing a chart.

  2. Click +Add filter in the Filter field.

  3. Select criteria such as match type, campaign name, or sitelink.

    1. From the next list, select one of the conditions from the list.

The conditions shown depend on the criteria that you specified. They might include equals, does not equalcontains text, contains any of, starts with, and so on.

For example, if you select the Label name criteria and the starts with condition, you’ll need to enter the text at the beginning of the labels that you want. If instead you select the contains any of condition, you’ll see a list of existing labels to select. Select the checkboxes for the labels that you want and then click Apply.

The Engine type criteria can only be used with the equals condition.

    2. From the last box, select or enter a value to evaluate.

If you selected the equals or does not equal condition, you can select from a predefined list of values. Select the checkboxes that you want, and then click Apply.

Otherwise, enter the value that you want.

    3. Do any of the following:

      • To include more metrics, click +OR and add more criteria to match.

      • To add another rule and make the filter more restrictive, click the +AND button.

      • To remove one or more of the filter’s rules, click the X at the end of the rule.

  4. Select a metric criteria.

    1. From the Select a metric list, select one of the metrics.
    2. From the next list, select one of the following conditions to specify the values that you want:

If you filter or segment by labels applied at the campaign level, reports that you download and full reports that you view on the web will contain metrics for Shopping campaigns and impression share.

If you’ve already created a filter, each rule that you created appears next to Filter.
