Use Battery Saver on a Pixel phone

To make your battery last longer, you can set Battery Saver to turn on automatically. You can also turn on Battery Saver at any time. To save even more power on your device, you can turn on Extreme Battery Saver.

Important: While Battery Saver is on, a Pixel phone with 5G may use 4G service that depends on your carrier network. Learn what changes while Battery Saver is on.

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 11 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

How do I know if Battery Saver is turned on or off?

When Battery Saver is on, at the top of your screen, you’ll find Battery Saver on . To turn Battery Saver on or off:

  1. At the top of your screen, swipe down.
  2. Tap Battery Saver .

Turn Battery Saver on automatically

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery And then Battery Saver And then Schedule and reminders.
  3. Make sure that "Turn on based on battery level" is on.
  4. Slide the percentage bar to the level you want.
Tip: The next time your battery level falls to the percentage you have set, Battery Saver will turn on automatically for you.

Let Battery Saver turn off when your phone is charged

Battery Saver can turn off automatically when your phone's battery reaches 90%.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery And then Battery Saver And then Schedule and reminders.
  3. Make sure that “Turn off at 90%” is on.

Turn Battery Saver reminders on

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery Saver and then Schedule and reminders.
  3. Turn on Battery Saver reminders.

Tips:

  • Battery Saver turns off while your phone charges.
  • Your phone will send Battery Saver reminders when your phone reaches 20% and again at 10%.

How can I save more power with Extreme Battery Saver?

On your Pixel 3 or later phone, including Fold, you can save even more power with Extreme Battery Saver. Extreme Battery Saver lets Battery Saver turn off more features, pause most apps, and slow processing for even more time between charges.

Important: Paused apps won’t send notifications. Learn what changes when Extreme Battery Saver is on.

Choose when to use Extreme Battery Saver
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery Saver and then Extreme Battery Saver.  
Choose apps to stay active with Extreme Battery Saver

You can choose which apps will still run while Extreme Battery Saver is on. To save the most battery, choose only critical apps.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery and then Battery Saver and then Extreme Battery Saver and then Essential apps
  3. Pick which apps to leave unpaused.
Temporarily use paused apps in Extreme Battery Saver

While Extreme Battery Saver is on, most apps pause. To use a paused app, unpause it.

  1. Tap a paused app.
  2. On the message that shows, tap Unpause temporarily.
    • The app won’t pause again until the next time you use Extreme Battery Saver.

What do Standard & Extreme Battery Savers limit when turned on?

To save power, Standard Battery Saver limits apps and features. On Pixel 3 and later phones, including Fold, in addition to what Standard Battery Saver limits, the Extreme Battery Saver:

  • Pauses most apps
  • Turns off features
  • Slows processes

Both of the battery savers never turn off essential system apps like Phone, Messages, Clock, and Settings.

What Standard Battery Saver limits
  • Your homescreen wallpaper dims slightly.
  • Apps refresh their content, like email or news, only when you open the app.
  • Location services stop when your screen is off.
  • Apps don’t run in the background, unless you turn off battery optimization.
  • Your phone doesn’t listen for "Ok Google” and can’t continue a conversation. Instead, each time, tap Google Assistant Assistant.
  • Dark Theme turns on.
  • Low priority notifications may be delayed.
  • "Always show time and info" turns off.
  • Pixel phones with Active Edge won’t respond to a squeeze.
  • On Pixel 3, Pixel 4, and later Pixel phones, car crash detection turns off.
  • On Pixel 4 phones, Motion Sense turns off.
  • On Pixel 4 and later Pixel phones, smooth display turns off.
  • While Battery Saver is on, a Pixel phone that supports 5G may use 4G service.
  • Power-saving audio codec for compatible Bluetooth headsets are supported.
What Extreme Battery Saver limits (Pixel 3 & later, including Fold)

Extreme Battery Saver adds more limits to what Battery Saver already restricts. You can turn settings back on at any time in your Settings app.

  • Most apps pause. Paused apps won’t send notifications.
  • Your phone’s processing (CPU) slows.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work, but Wi-Fi Scanning and Bluetooth Scanning for location data turn off.
  • Your work profile turns off.
  • Your phone’s screen timeout drops to 30 seconds.
  • Any current hotspot or tethering stops.
  • To use the leftmost home screen, unpause the Google app.
