Find, open & close apps

You can open apps, switch between them, and see 2 apps at once. You'll find some apps on your Home screens, and all your apps in All Apps. 

Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 9.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Find & open apps

From anywhere

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to the top. 
  2. Tap the app that you want to open.

If you're using a Google Account for work or school: You'll find your apps in a "Work" tab.

From shortcuts

You can quickly get to places inside some apps.

  1. Touch and hold the app.
  2. If you see options, choose one.

Switch between recent apps

  1. From the bottom of your screen, swipe up to the middle.
  2. Swipe left or right to switch to the app you want to open.
  3. Tap the app that you want to open.

Another way to switch: Press and slide Home to the left or right.

See 2 apps at the same time (split screen)

  1. Open an app.
  2. From the bottom of your screen, swipe up to the middle of your screen.
  3. Touch and hold the app's icon.
  4. Tap Split screen.
  5. You'll see 2 screens. In the second screen, tap another app.

To see one app again, drag the bar between the apps to the top or bottom of your screen.

Close apps

  • Close one app: Swipe up on the app.
  • Close all apps: Scroll up. On the left, tap Clear all.
  • See your Home screen: Tap Home Home

What happens when you don't close your apps: You won't run out of memory or battery since Android manages these automatically.
