Wish folder names were imported as album names when uploading.

Lot of people have already organised their photo collection into folders. Google Photos should just add them as album name tags.

It would save organising after uploading and would be huuuuuge encouragement to attract new users

Picasa desktop app does in fact do just that and album will appear on Google photos too.

It does it you use Picasa Windows application.  I have used its batch upload feature to upload many folders and they all become Google Photo Albums that match the folders name.  One big downside of the Picasa uploader is if you upload your Picasa (Windows) ALBUMS and FOLDERS you get duplicates.  A picture that is in a folder and album are uploaded twice.  Silly.

@Stefano Costi

I understand your frustration. Google had the perfect tool (Picasa3) to upload folders to albums but the Photos team obviously is a bunch of smartphone shooters without experience with Picasa. Their only interest was to get rid of it, and replace it with an uploader that threats you as a smartphone shooter: just upload, we (and you) do the rest in Google Pgotos. As if a computer has no much more powerful editing/organising tools, and as if we would trust a single copy of our photos. Unbelievable. But even worse is that they do not even warn users that the uploader creates a big mess. They are so proud of their so-called "smart" grouping of pictures (which is impressive indeed) that they think it can replace your own made albums and indexing, which it cannot.

Having said this: you can still upload folders to albums using Toolas > Batch upoad in Picasa3. See here.
Unfortunately only in 2048 pixels (with G+ profile) or Original size. You can use "Recover storage" in https://photos.google.com/settings to convert "Original" to "High Quality" though.

Unless you can re-create albums in Photos (when well separated by date) you better delete and start over again, using Picasa3 or manually uploading one folder at a time, both time consuming activities.
