Editor not working on computer

After opening an album in Photos, an image is selected for editing.  As expected, the image is displayed on the screen below.  It takes several seconds for the four Suggestions to initialize.  Once the initialization completes, the image disappears and the screen goes dark as shown below.  This occurs in Chrome and Edge.  I have no issues using the Photos app on my mobile device.  Both browsers are up to date: Chrome (116.0.5845.141) and Edge (116.0.1938.62).  The issue persists even when all extensions are turned off.

Hi, User 17607878197520796320

Welcome to the Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

What's the OS on your desktop & which browser do you use?
Further, could you try a different browser?

The dynamic suggestion has turned out to be a rabbit trail leading to nowhere.

The very first time Photos ran in Firefox (3rd browser) the dynamic option did not display.  I questioned whether or not this cost feature could have anything to do with the issue.  The next time Photos was launched in Firefox the dynamic option appeared.

I tried running Photos on a different computer and it is working with Chrome and Edge.  I did not try Firefox.  Both computers are running Windows 10 22H2.  Thanks for your help!

Hi,  User 17607878197520796320

Thanks for the clarification.
The "Dynamic" suggestion has no connection with the browser. It's an editing suggestion by the Google Photos AI to create more focus on the main subject of the picture.

Nevertheless, the issue appears specific to the desktop.
However, when did the problem start?
Could you roll back the OS status to a date before that date?
You can look for a restore point through the settings.

I have the same problem. The editing tools take forever to load and freeze once they do load. I would MUCH prefer the old version. I edit a lot of photos and have a subscription with google one and if it is not fixed I will start to use something else. So very frustrating to say the least.

Same issue here on the latest windows update and Chrome. Google Photos editor works fine on my Pixel phone but lags and barely works at all on my PC.

Try checking the Chrome setting "Use hardware acceleration when available." If it is on, try turning it off and relaunching Chrome. HTH!

I have the same problem on my laptop.  Spoke to Google about it few months back and their answer was unbeliveably riduclous ( if not a downright lie) which was that despite their annoucement of these new editing features being available on laptops etc, ie the web version of Google Photos, it will not work on these devices and you can only edit on Android.  Why the annoucement then? Same nonsense answer.

Wait, what?  You were able to speak with someone?  I keep getting looped around the Help site, and while the "contact us" button is visible, it's not functional.

Do you have an ad blocker active? When I use "Undetectable AdBlocker" Google buttons stop working for me sometimes. I thought it might be related to the photo editor issue as it seems like some sort of black overlay, and Google is cracking down on ad blockers. But mine is off, and the editor still doesn't work. I haven't tried deleting the blocker, but I feel that's a waste of time as it shouldn't make a difference if it is off, I am guessing... IDK???

I've tried many reasonable efforts to solve this problem. It works just fine on Firefox, but on Chrome on Windows 11 pro is yields the black screen. That has to be embarrassing for the Big G, right?  It also works correctly with Chrome on Ubuntu. I have turned off all extensions, cleared data, restarted it, rebooted. I stop short of reinstalling it. If it is some sort of profile issue can anyone suggest how to delete the profile (without resetting all of Chrome in the settings, I mean). Perhaps there is a corrupt file somewhere? I hope this is resolved soon.

I could not replicate this issue using Chrome on a friend's computer so thought it might be specific to my setup. Indeed, I discovered when I entered Chrome settings>System and turned "Use hardware acceleration when available" to off, then relaunch, the editor returns like magic. My friend's computer has it turned on, and it works fine on his too. So, I suspect it has to do with my GCU or its drivers. Mine is a AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. Hope this helps someone!
