Back up or restore data on your Nexus, Android One, or Google Play Edition device

You can back up content, data, and settings from your Android device to your Google Account. You can restore your backed-up information to the original device or to another Android device.

Back up content

  • Photos & videos
    You can automatically back up your photos and videos to your Google Photos library. Learn how.
  • Files & folders
    You can manually upload files and folders to Google Drive. Learn how.
  • Music
    You can save music to Google Play with Music Manager. Learn how.

Back up data & settings

Note: On a tablet that multiple people use, only the tablet's owner can see the backup and reset options.

What gets backed up
  • Google Calendar settings
  • Wi-Fi networks & passwords
  • Home screen wallpapers
  • Gmail settings
  • Apps installed through Google Play
  • Display settings (Brightness & Sleep)
  • Language & Input settings
  • Date & Time
  • Settings & data for apps not made by Google (varies by app)

Note: Some apps may not back up or restore all data.

How to back up

To back up your data

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings .
  2. Under "Personal," tap Backup & reset.
  3. Tap Back up my data.
  4. Turn on Back up my data.

To add a backup account

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings .
  2. Under "Personal," tap Backup & reset.
  3. Tap Backup account and then Add account.
  4. If needed, enter your device's PIN, pattern, or password.
  5. Sign in to the account that you want to add.

To switch between backup accounts

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings .
  2. Under "Personal," tap Backup & reset.
  3. Tap Backup account.
  4. Tap the account that you want to use for backups.

When you add your Google Account to a device, what you'd previously backed up for that Google Account gets put onto the device.

Restore backed-up app settings

When you reinstall an app on your device, you can choose to restore app settings that you previously backed up with your Google Account.

To restore app settings on your device:

  1. Open your device's Settings app Settings.
  2. Under "Personal," tap Backup & reset.
  3. Turn on Automatic restore.

Note: Some apps may not back up or restore all data.

Erase your device's data after backing up

After you back up your data, if you want to erase everything on your device, you can do a factory reset. After resetting, you'll need to re-enter the same information as when you first set up.
