Back up & restore contacts from your device or SIM card

You can back up the contacts stored on your device, SIM card, or Google Account. If you lose or need to replace your phone, you can restore these contacts on the new phone.

  • Device or SIM card: The contacts won't sync automatically to your phone or SIM card. If you lose your phone, your latest contacts may not be saved.
  • Google Account: Syncing your contacts with your Google Account will automatically back up the information. If you get a new phone and add your Google Account, the contacts can be restored to your new phone. Learn about syncing.
Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.

Restore contacts from backups

  1. Open your device’s Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap Google.
  3. Under "Services," tap Restore contacts.
  4. If you have multiple Google Accounts, to choose which account's contacts to restore, tap From account.
  5. Tap the device with the contacts to copy.
  6. If you don’t want to copy contacts from your SIM card or device storage, turn off SIM card or Device storage.
