Join a meeting

You can join a video meeting from Google Meet, Google Calendar or Gmail.

Google Workspace for Education

Your Google Workspace admin controls what meetings you can join and can change this to:

  • Only join meetings organised by someone in your school.
  • Join meetings organised by anyone.

By default, any meetings organised by personal account, Google One, Google Workspace or Google Workspace Individual users.

Your Google Workspace admin controls what meetings you can join and can change this to:

  • Only join meetings organised by someone in your organisation.
  • Only join meetings organised by Google Workspace users. This doesn't include Workspace Individual subscribers.

All Google Account users.

Tips:

  • Some Workspace admins might stop their users from joining the meetings that you organise.
  • Users who haven't signed in to a Google Account must request to join.
  • If you're a Workspace Individual user, people who dial in by phone can also join your meetings.

Google Workspace for Education

By default, only users in your school and anyone who dials in with a phone.

Your admin can change this to:

  • Anyone signed in with a Google Account or those who dial in with a phone.
  • Everyone, even users not signed in with a Google Account.

Google Workspace

By default, all Google Account users and those who haven't signed in to a Google Account.

Your admin can change this to:

  • Only users in your organisation or anyone who dials in with a phone.
  • Anyone signed in with a Google Account.
  • Everyone, even users not signed in with a Google Account.

Join a video meeting from Google Meet

In the Google Meet app, to join a video meeting:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Meet app Meet app.
  2. Under 'Meetings', select a scheduled meeting.
    • Or use a meeting code or nickname:
      1. At the top, next to the search bar , tap Keyboard .
      2. Enter the meeting code or nickname.
      3. At the top right, tap Join.
  3. Tap Join .
    • If you're from a different organisation, tap Ask to join .

Tips:

  • When the first five participants join, you can hear a chime sound. After that, you get a silent notification for new participants.
  • You can only use meeting nicknames with people in your organisation. This is currently available only to Google Workspace users.

Join a video meeting from a Google Calendar event

You can find your scheduled meetings in Calendar and join a video meeting.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Calendar app Calendar.
  2. Select the event that you want to join.
  3. Tap Join with Google Meet.
  4. In the window that opens, tap Join .

If your Google Workspace admin allows it, you can also join from other video meeting devices.

Join a video meeting from Gmail Join a video meeting with a meeting link URL

If you don't have enough time to schedule a meeting or book a room, you can join a quick video meeting with a link.

  1. Open the text or email with the meeting link.
  2. Tap the meeting link.
  3. In the window that opens, tap Join .

Tip: If you're not on the calendar invite, you need to request to join and the meeting organiser or a participant must let you in.

Use a phone to dial in

Important:

  • You can only dial in if the meeting is organised by a Google Workspace user.
  • A dial-in number is only added when admins turn on the dial-in feature.

If your Google Workspace admin allows it, you can call in for audio-only access from 15 minutes before the meeting starts until it ends. Someone in the meeting can let you in sooner.

You can be from a different organisation or use a different Google Workspace edition than the event organiser. If you're in the organiser's directory, your name shows in the meeting. If not, it shows as 'Private caller'.

  • Participants should always verify the identity of callers.
  • Anyone who calls in counts towards the maximum participant limit.
  • Regular call charges apply.

Dial in with a phone number

Important:

  1. In the Meet or Calendar app, tap the dial-in number.
    • Or you can:
      1. Dial the number shown in the Google Calendar event or meeting invitation.
      2. Enter the PIN, followed by '#'.
  2. To mute or unmute, press *6.

Tips:

  • All Google Workspace editions include a US phone number.
  • These Google Workspace editions support international numbers in video meetings:
    • G Suite Basic
    • G Suite Business
    • Google Workspace Essentials
    • Enterprise
    • Education Plus
  • If your organisation turns on 'Meet Global Dialling', additional international numbers become available.
  • Long-distance and usage charges from your phone operator may apply.

Use third-party devices

If your organisation allows it, you can join meetings from third-party devices. If you're an admin, learn how to allow third-party devices.

If you use a Zoom Rooms or Cisco Webex device:

To join a meeting, select the event from the list of scheduled events.

  • Or use the meeting code or nickname.
    1. On your meeting device, open the Google Meet app Meet app.
    2. Enter the meeting code.

If you use other third-party devices with Pexip:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Calendar app Calendar.
  2. Select the event that you want to join.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: If you join from a third-party device:

  • You must use the third-party controls. Without third-party controls, you can't use features like:
    • Turning your camera or microphone on or off
    • Meeting chat
    • Recording meetings
    • Admitting or removing other participants
    • Muting or unmuting other participants
  • Other Meet participants can't mute your room.
Join without a Google Account

You can join a meeting without a Google Account, but the organiser or a participant needs to let you in.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, to join a meeting:
    • With a meeting link:
      1. Open the chat message or email with the meeting link.
      2. Tap the meeting link.
    • From the Google Meet app:
      1. Open the Google Meet app Meet app.
      2. At the top, tap Code .
      3. Enter the meeting code.
      4. At the top right, tap Join.
  2. Enter your name.
  3. Tap Ask to join .

Learn about meeting privacy

  • When you join a meeting, to fix issues and for audit purposes, we share your meeting identifiers, like email or phone number, with the host.
  • If you use a personal Google Account and when a user flagged for bad behaviour joins the meeting, the moderator gets a message. The message shows: 'This person is suspected of being bad in the past.'
