Use bots to help you in Google chat

Bots are automatic programs you chat with, just like people. 

They can help:

  • Look up information
  • Schedule a meeting
  • Complete a task

Find bots and add them to Chat

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. In the Chat section, click Add.
  3. Find a bot you want to add, or enter the bot name in the search box.
  4. Click the bot card.
  5. Select an option:
    • Message: This opens a direct message between you and the bot.
    • Add to room: Click the rooms where you want to add the bot > Add.

Add bots in direct messages

  1. Open Gmail .
  2. In the Chat section, select a direct message.
  3. At the top, click Menu "" next to the person, or list of people in the chat.
  4. Click Add bots.
  5. Enter the name of the bot, or select from the suggestions.
  6. Click Add.

Use bots to get help or give feedback

  1. Open Chat.
  2. Select an option:
    • In a direct message between you and the bot, type Help.
    • In a room with other people, enter @botname help. Botname is the name of the bot.
  3. Send Google a comment about the bot. Select an option:
    • In a direct message with the bot, enter your comments in the feedback section.
    • In a room or direct message, enter @botname > your feedback.

Remove bots

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. In the Chat section, next to the bot you want to remove, click Menu  and then Remove.

Create bots

To create custom bots, go to the Google Chat API documentation.
