Get started with Google Workspace Labs

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is a trusted tester program for users to try new AI features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open a document in Google Docs. On the left, find Help me write . Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

Workspace Labs is a way for you to experiment with AI-assisted capabilities in our products and share feedback. As a Workspace Labs participant, you have early access to test features that may change over time.

Learn about Workspace Labs feature suggestions

  • Workspace Labs feature suggestions don’t represent Google’s views, and should not be attributed to Google.
  • Don’t rely on Workspace Labs features as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice.
  • Workspace Labs features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information. Your feedback makes Workspace Labs more helpful and safe.
  • Don’t include personal, confidential, or sensitive information in your prompts.
  • Google uses Workspace Labs data and metrics to provide, improve, and develop products, services, and machine learning technologies across Google.
  • Your Workspace Labs Data may also be read, rated, annotated, and reviewed by human reviewers. Importantly, where Google uses Google-selected input (as described in the Privacy Notice) to generate output, Google will aggregate and/or pseudonymize that content and resulting output before it is viewed by human reviewers, unless it is specifically provided as part of your feedback to Google.

Learn about current Workspace Labs features

In Google Docs

You can use artificial intelligence to write text and other tasks:

  • You can use the "Help me write" prompt in Docs to suggest text based on your prompts. For example:
    • Draft a blog post.
    • Write song lyrics.
    • Rewrite existing text to be more detailed or concise.
  • You can use the Gemini in Google Docs side panel to:
    • Write and refine content in context.
    • Summarize your files from Drive and emails from Gmail.
    • Create images.
    • Get creative ideas.

Important: The Gemini in Google Docs side panel is rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet.

In Gmail

You can use artificial intelligence to write emails and other tasks:

  • You can use the "Help me write" button in Gmail to draft emails based on your prompts. For example:
    • Make a cover letter for a job.
    • Create a birthday invitation to your friends.
    • Write a more detailed and concise draft.
  • You can use the Gemini in Gmail side panel to:
    • Summarize an email thread.
    • Suggest responses to an email thread.
    • Find information from previous emails.
    • Find information from your Google Drive files.

In Google Slides

You can use artificial intelligence to create images and other tasks:

In Google Sheets

You can use artificial intelligence to organize and automate manual text processing tasks.

In Google Meet

Important: These features are gradually rolling out and may not be available to you yet.

You can use artificial intelligence in Google Meet to:

  • Create a background image. For example, you can create an illustration of a magical forest as your background. Learn how to create background images based on prompts.
  • Improve your Google Meet video quality and fix issues caused by low light or low quality webcams. This process automatically happens in the cloud to enhance video quality without an impact to device performance. Learn more about studio look.
  • Simulate studio-quality lighting and adjust the lighting position, brightness, and color to look your best.Learn more about studio lighting.
  • Automatically improve poor audio quality from typical bluetooth headsets and for dial-in participants with the use of AI to recreate higher audio frequencies.Learn more about studio sound.
  • Automatically capture meeting notes and action items in real time, send summaries to attendees, and help late attendees catch up with “summary so far.” Learn more about take notes for me.
In Google Drive

You can use the Gemini in Google Drive side panel to:

  • Summarize files.
  • Pull information from files, such as numbers, time, people, instructions and examples.
  • Ask open questions about a topic based on your files.

In Keep

You can use artificial intelligence to create lists.
To create a list, select the “Help me create a list” prompt. Learn how to use AI to create a list.

Troubleshooting issues with Workspace Labs features

If you have trouble accessing Workspace Labs features, try the solutions below:

Turn off Workspace Labs features

Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. To permanently exit Workspace Labs, go to Google Docs, Google Slides, Sheets, Gmail, or Meet.

How to exit from Google Docs, Slides & Sheets
  1. On your computer, open a file on Google DocsSlides, or Sheets.
  2. At the top, go to Tools and then Opt out of Labs Opt out of Labs.
  3. Click Confirm.
How to exit from Gmail
  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. At the top, click Settings .
  3. In the Labs program notification, click Opt out.
  4. Click Opt out and reload.
How to exit from Meet

To opt out of Workspace Labs:

  1. On your computer, go to Meet.
  2. At the top right, click Settings .
  3. On the left, click Workspace Labs and then Opt out.
