Create background images with AI in Google Meet (Workspace Labs)

Important:
  • The "Generate a background" prompt in Google Meet is rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet.
  • This article is referring to Google Workspace Labs, which is a trusted tester program for users to try new AI features by invitation. The Workspace Labs program is currently available to trusted testers in US English, and may not be available in your country. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs program features:
    1. On a computer, open meet.google.com.
    2. Select a meeting.
    3. At the bottom right of your self view, click Apply visual effects .
    4. Find Generate a background .

On Google Meet, you can use the "Generate a background" prompt to create background images using artificial intelligence. For example, you can ask Google Meet to create an illustration of a magical forest.

This feature is currently available on desktop. In your self view, your background will appear mirrored or inverted. However, the other participants in the meeting will see the correct orientation.

Create a background image before a meeting

  1. On a computer, open meet.google.com.
  2. Select a meeting.
  3. At the bottom right of your self view, click Apply visual effects and then Generate a background .
  4. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • "Luxurious living room interior"
    • "A magical sunny forest glade"

      Tip: For better results, try including reference to a style or mood, a setting, and objects in the environment. For example: "A cozy coffee shop with flowers."
  5. (Optional) You can select a style to customize the background image you create.
  6. Click Create samples to see several suggested background images.
  7. (Optional) After you click Create samples, you can:
    • Edit your prompt: At the top of the panel on the right, click the prompt. Edit your prompt and click Create other samples.
    • See more suggested background images: Click Create other samples.
  8. Click one of the generated images to use as your background in your meeting.
  9. Click Close to exit "Generate a background" setup.

Give feedback on generated background images

If you get an inaccurate or unsafe suggestion, you can submit feedback to us. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

Because feedback may be read by a human, do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.

To submit feedback:

  1. Hover over the desired image.
  2. On the bottom of the image, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  3. If you click Bad suggestion , you can select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
  4. Click Submit.

To provide general feedback on backgrounds images in a meeting, click More options and then Report a problem .

To report a legal issue, create a request.

Turn off the "Generate a background" prompt

To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs, you must exit the Workspace Labs program. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs program features, and you won't be able to rejoin the Workspace Labs program. Learn more about how to exit Workspace Labs.

How Workspace Labs data in Google Meet is collected

When you use the "Generate a background" prompt in Google Meet, Google uses and stores the following data:

  • Image style selected for the generated background
