Smart features & personalization controls in Gmail, Chat, Meet, and other Google services

There are two settings in Gmail that control how your data is used within Gmail, Chat and Meet and how it is shared with other Google products.

Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet that depend on your data include:

Features in other Google products that depend on your Gmail, Chat, and Meet data include:

As new features that depend on your data get added to these products, they will also be controlled by these same settings.

Important: Beginning on January 25th, if you are based in Europe, the above settings will be turned off by default. Once this change is rolled out, multiple features of Gmail and other Google products won’t work unless you enable these settings. Follow the instructions below to set up these options in Gmail settings.

Change smart features & personalization settings

for Gmail, Chat, and Meet:

  1. On your computer, go to gmail.com.
  2. Click Settings Settings and then See all settings.
  3. In the “General” tab, scroll to “Smart features and personalization.”
  4. To turn smart features on or off, check or uncheck the box.

for other Google products:

  1. On your computer, go to gmail.com.
  2. Click Settings Settings and then See all settings.
  3. In the “General” tab, scroll to “Smart features and personalization in other Google products.”
  4. To turn data sharing for other products on or off, check or uncheck the box.

Important: Changing the settings on Gmail web will also apply to your Gmail mobile app. If you’re using the mobile Gmail app, but have not seen a prompt about these settings yet, we recommend updating your app. If you can’t update your app, you can still change these settings from a desktop browser as described above, but changes might not be properly reflected in your mobile app.
