About Google Ads certification assessments

The Google Ads certification assessments are designed to test your knowledge of online advertising best practices and Google Ads. They are required to become Google Ads certified.

This article contains information about the assessments, including how to prepare for the assessments and access them. It also includes information on the passing scores and time limits for each assessment.

Before you begin

If you don't have an Academy for Ads account, you need to do so to access the AdWords assessments that are required to become certified. Find out how to set up your Academy for Ads account.

About the assessments

The Google Ads certification assessments are designed to test your knowledge of basic and advanced online advertising concepts, including the following:

  • Value proposition of online advertising
  • Campaign setup and management
  • Measurement
  • Optimization

Available assessments

Assessment Description
Google Ads Fundamentals The Google Ads Fundamentals assessment covers basic and intermediate concepts, including the benefits of online advertising and Google Ads, and best practices for managing and optimizing Google Ads campaigns.
Search Advertising The Search Advertising assessment covers basic and advanced concepts, including best practices for creating, managing, measuring, and optimizing search ad campaigns across the Search Network.
Display Advertising The Display Advertising assessment covers advanced concepts and  best practices for creating, managing, measuring, and optimizing Display campaigns.
Mobile Advertising The Mobile Advertising assessment covers the basic and advanced concepts of mobile advertising, including ad formats, bidding and targeting, and campaign measurement and optimization.
Video Advertising The Video Advertising assessment covers basic and advanced concepts, including best practices for creating, managing, measuring, and optimizing video advertising campaigns across YouTube and the web.
Shopping Advertising The Shopping Advertising assessment covers basic and advanced concepts, including creating a Merchant Center account and product data feed, and creating and managing Shopping campaigns.

The Google Ads certification assessment are available in 21 languages.

How to prepare for the assessments

Before taking the Google Ads assessments, we recommend that you have on-the-job experience using Google Ads. You should be familiar with online advertising concepts and best practices, and should have experience managing different types of Google Ads campaigns.

Academy for Ads online courses

When you sign in to your Academy for Ads account, you can access learning paths for each assessment. You'll want to take the courses in each learning path to help you study for the assessments. Note that the Academy for Ads courses are available in English only.

How to take the assessments

In Academy for Ads, you can take assessments from any learning path that has "certification" in its title.

For the Google Ads certifications, you need to take 2 assessments — the Google Ads Fundamentals and an additional product area assessment. When you take the assessments, you need to pass the Fundamentals assessment before you can access the product area assessment.

To become Google Ads certified in a Google Ads product area, you need to pass the Google Ads Fundamentals assessment and one of the additional advertising product assessments that are available through Academy for Ads. The additional assessments are Search Advertising, Display Advertising, Mobile Advertising, Video Advertising, and Shopping Advertising. 

Once you’ve passed the Google Ads Fundamentals assessment, and as long as it is valid (not expired), you’ll only need to pass the respective product assessment to earn that Google Ads product certification.
To earn the Google Ads Search certification you you’ll need to:

  • Pass the Google Ads Fundamentals assessment
  • Pass the Search Advertising assessment

To earn the Google Ads Display certification in addition, you’ll need to:

  • Pass the Display Advertising assessment. 

Note: You’ll always need to retake and pass the required assessments when they expire in order to keep your certification valid.

Assessment passing scores and time limits

Below is the score that you need to get pass each assessment and how long you have to take each. If you don't pass an assessment, you can retake it 1 day later.

There's a timer that will start to count down when you begin the assessment. You won't be able to pause the timer once it starts. If you leave the assessment — for example, if you close your browser or your computer shuts down — the timer will immediately expire. You'll have to wait 1 day to take the assessment again.
