Updates to age requirements for Google Workspace for Education users

Google Workspace for Education users who are under 18 will lose access to Google Ads on or after 7 September 2021.

Admins of Google Workspace for Education accounts can now let Google know if an account is owned by someone under 18 years of age.

If your admin indicates that your account is under the age of 18, you’ll lose access to Google Ads on or after 7 September 2021, as per Google Ads’ age requirements.

If you lose access to the Google Ads account, you won’t be able to do the following:

  • Invite, remove or otherwise manage users
  • Update any payment settings
  • Edit payment-related information

If you're the admin of the Ads account, make sure that you download any campaign data that you need before 1 September.

Frequently asked questions

1. How is Google identifying users below 18 years of age?

Google is working with account admins to understand which users are below 18 years of age. Users who have been labelled by their admins will lose access to Google Ads. You can find more details here.

2. Why is Google not allowing users under 18 years of age to access Google Ads?

Google Ads does not allow users below 18 years of age to access Google Ads. More details can be found here: Google Ads’ age requirements.

3. What happens to the Google Ads account when all of the users are below 18 years old?

If all of the users on a Google Ads account are below 18 years of age and the account doesn't have a manager, the account will be suspended. Users will not be able to access campaign information, update settings or manage users. Once the current billing cycle is over, we will stop serving active campaigns to prevent accrual of additional charges and you will no longer be billed for any Google Ads automatically in future billing cycles.

4. What happens when some users on the Google Ads account are above 18 years of age?

The account will not be suspended. The users below 18 years of age will lose access to Google Ads on 7 September 2021. Your ads will continue to be served and your account will continue to be billed.

We advise that at least one user above 18 years of age be given admin rights on this account, so that they can continue to manage the account. After 7 September 2021, users below 18 years of age will not be able to manage user permissions.  In addition, if the payments profile on the Google Ads account is linked to an under 18 user, ads will no longer be served and billing will stop after the current cycle. The account, however, will not be suspended. In this case, you can contact us to transfer the payment profile for your Google Ads account.

5. What can I do to access our payment information if our account is suspended?

If you are receiving this email, please update your payment settings as required. If your account has already been suspended, you can contact us to update your payment information.

6. Will I continue to be billed when our Ads account is suspended?

No, billing will stop as soon as the current billing cycle finishes. Google will also stop serving your ads so that no additional charges are accrued in the next billing cycle.

7. What should I do when I receive this email?

As soon as you receive this email, you should take the following actions:

  1. Download any campaign-related information, especially if you are an admin user on this Google Ads account.
  2. Update your recovery devices so that other users above 18 years of age can still access this account.
  3. Update your payment settings as required.

8. How do I know if my user account will be suspended?

It's recommended that you reach out to an admin user on your Google for Workspace Education account. An admin user on your account will determine which users are labelled as below 18 years of age.

9. I am over 18 and can provide proof of my age. How do I appeal the account access/suspension?

Your Google Workspace for Education account is managed by your administrator. If you have any questions about access to your account, please contact your administrator to discuss.Who is my Administrator?
